AGS is a Local Education Authority School (LEA) for boys aged 11 to 18 (Years 7 to 13). It is a day school i.e. it has no boarding facilities.To gain access boys must be resident in the catchment area and pass an exam while in Year 6.
The school also takes boys from the catchment area into the 6th form
The equivalent school for girls is Aylesbury High School

Entry Requirments
To apply for a place in Year 7, 8 or 9, parents must contact Buckinghamshire County Council.
For a place in Year 10 or Year 11 (including those boys currently in Year 9), apply direct to the school on the contacts above or by e-mail. The school will follow the process descibed in the Year 10 and 11 Admissions procedure.

Sixth Form Entry
NEW ENTRANTS
We are very pleased to consider an application from any pupil who wishes to continue his studies beyond GCSE. In past years a considerable number of pupils have transferred from upper, comprehensive and independent schools to our Sixth Form and have benefited in terms of extra qualifications and opportunities for further education and careers.
AGE OF ADMISSION
Normal age of admission to the Sixth Form is 16 years. If special circumstances dictate we will consider applications from students aged 15 or 17 years but we do not accept applications from those who are younger or older than this.
OPEN EVENING
A meeting will be held at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 13th November when it will be possible to discuss, without obligation, the courses that are offered. A provisional application form will be completed during the course of this evening. If you cannot attend the open session, then an individual interview can be arranged by contacting the Office Manager, giving brief details of your proposed course of study.
CRITERIA FOR ENTRY INTO YEAR 12
What you require to enter Year 12
Our minimum requirements are 7 GCSE passes at C or above including English and Mathematics, of which at least 4 are at B grade or above. The GCSEs at B or above must include those subjects most relevant to the 4 AS level subjects the candidate wishes to study. Exceptional cases (e.g. candidates without GCSEs because they have been educated abroad, or because they were ill) will be considered individually by the Headmaster.
Oversubscription
If there are too many applicants the oversubscription criteria apply. These are as follows (in descending order of application) – for more detail contact Bucks CC admissions team:

Students who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs which names AGS.

Certain students in public care.

Students living within the catchment area of the school.

Siblings of students who will be at the school on the date of admission, in Years 7 to 13.

Students who have needs supported by written evidence from an appropriate professional.

Highest GCSE score of best 8 GCSEs, where A* = 8, A = 7 etc. (if this produces “ties” then highest overall GCSE score is awarded a place)

Closest distance from home to school (if tie-breaks are needed when the other criteria have been applied)
When to apply
You can apply at any time, but early application makes you more likely to get a place if we are oversubscribed. Students will be in four “tranches” for this purpose:
First tranche: If you apply before the end of February
We ask your current school in March for a reference so we can assess whether you are likely to meet our requirements – this enables us to appoint staff to teach the subjects we need.
We write in April to tell you whether or not we think you are likely to gain a place, so that you can plan your future education better.
· If we tell you that you are likely to gain a place, we will plan for you taking your preferred subjects.
· If we tell you that you are not likely to gain a place, we will not include you in our plans.
In either case when you find out your GCSE results, if you have qualified and want a place you must confirm this with us on the day of results for interview the following day.
All those in the first tranche who qualify and confirm in time that they want a place will be given places first (after applying the oversubscription criteria to this tranche, if necessary).
Second Tranche: If you apply between February and June
The arrangements are similar to the First Tranche, except that we may be less able to meet your subject preferences at this stage (if so we will tell you).
We will write to your current school as with the First Tranche, and write back to you. When you find out your GCSE results, if you have qualified and want a place you must confirm this with us on the day of results for interview the following day.
All those in the second tranche who qualify and confirm in time that they want a place will be given any places remaining after the first tranche have been given places (after applying the oversubscription criteria to this tranche, if necessary).
Third Tranche: If you apply between 1st July and the start of the Autumn term
There is no time to write to your current school, therefore, we will contact your school for as reference. We will ask you to tell us your GCSE results as soon as you have them, and attend for an interview the following day.
All those in the third tranche who qualify and confirm they want a place in time will be given places remaining after the second tranche have been given places (after applying the oversubscription criteria to this tranche, if necessary).
Fourth Tranche: If you apply on or after the first day of the Autumn term
We will check that you have met our requirements and that we have a place. We will also contact your school for a reference. Once term has begun the year group is deemed full when it has 180 students or more. We will offer you a place if there is one on a first come first served basis, but we reserve the right to refuse a place if we feel you will have difficulty catching up any work missed.
Waiting list
If we do not give you a place but you really want to come here, you can tell us that you want to be on the waiting list. Sometimes students’ plans change at the last minute, and in the first few days of term we have spare places. We will give these to First Tranche applicants first, then Second Tranche and so on. The waiting list will be kept until the end of the second week of term, and if you have not heard from us then you will know no place has become available.
YEAR 13
Entry into Year 13 is not automatic and students must achieve a minimum of three ‘E’ grades at AS level in the subjects they wish to continue if they are to enter the Upper Sixth.
