Barnard Castle School

The HeadmasterAcademic achievement lies at the heart of what we do. We expect high standards of discipline and intellectual focus in the classroom, and we track pupil progress against national benchmarks and our own responsive assessment arrangements. The house system ensures that pupils of different ability maintain contact and friendship, whilst stringent but sensitive setting in the core academic subjects provides competitive edge within the classroom. The desire to foster community whilst promoting individual talent reflects the school's Christian foundation which invites pupils to see themselves as vital components in a working whole driven by mutual respect and decency.

We believe that all our children have something to offer, and we are driven by a desire to find areas where each of them can excel. Every term we offer an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, and we are as proud of those who play chess for their house as those who play rugby for their country. By the time they leave our pupils should be confident, well-rounded young people, academically and socially prepared for the challenge of university life and the modern world. Should you wish to find out more about the school we would be delighted to arrange a time when you and your child can come and see it in action.

Pastoral

The pastoral care of each child is primarily the responsibility of the class teacher. The teacher will quickly get to know every child in his/her care and help them in their academic and social progress. PSHE lessons and school assemblies play a vital role in the children’s welfare.

Harvest Festival. Barnard Castle Prep School has the reputation for being a very friendly environment with every child valued as an individual. Everyone knows everyone else. The children know there is always someone to whom they can turn or talk to, be it another teacher, a member of the boarding staff or the school Chaplain.

Family atmosphere at lunch.Parents are also encouraged to establish close contact with the class teacher in order to put the child’s best interests first. If a problem arises, it is so much easier to “nip it in the bud” than try to pick up the pieces later. There are two formal parent/ teacher meetings during the year but teachers are always available to chat if the need arises.

Pre-Prep

The first years of a child’s education are vital and starting school can be a daunting prospect. Not so in our Pre-Prep department, where our experienced and caring teachers ensure these early days are enjoyable and fun and this is paramount in everything we do.

Whilst priority is given to reading, writing and number work, there are many opportunities for spontaneity and creativity. Closely following and extending the National Curriculum, pupils are encouraged to think for themselves by developing sound methods of study and a positive attitude to work. Children are encouraged to value themselves, respect each other and the world around them as they share in the fun of learning and discovery.

The Pre-Prep have their own recently refurbished classrooms within the main Prep School building, offering a safe and secure environment whilst being able to use the excellent facilities in and around the campus.

The Pre-Prep offers a fine start to your child’s education.

The Prep School

“We, the community of Barnard Castle Preparatory School, will encourage our children to reach their full educational potential within a secure and happy learning environment.”

The Prep School is an integral part of Barnard Castle School, having access to all its facilities and expertise. It is situated in a separate area of the school grounds with its own organisation, staff and buildings. Pupils, therefore, have the benefit of the security of their own area while benefiting from many extras.

The Prep School has recently undergone a substantial refurbishment programme and the next few years will see more exciting developments.

We are proud of what our pupils achieve as they strive to do their best and fulfil their potential. The privileged role of the teachers is to help them on their journey. We are fortunate that we can follow their progress as they pass from Prep School, into Senior School and on into the big wide world.

I hope the following information will explain our aims and objectives; however, a school is best understood by a visit to see it in action. If you have not yet done this please do so; you would be most welcome.
