Our Reception classes offer a stimulating learning environment, helping children to develop a positive attitude to learning. The newly developed learning space gives children the opportunity to experience many different aspects of learning. We understand the importance of play in children’s learning and lunchtimes are supervised by trained staff to motivate and encourage the children in directed play.

Year One aims to consolidate children’s learning and to build upon and further develop the knowledge and skills they have gained in the Foundation Stage. We try to make the children’s learning as practical and as cross curricular as possible. We have daily mathematics and literacy lessons and offer a broad range of subjects across the week. Children learn to become increasingly more independent both in their learning and in their personal organisation. We welcome parent helpers into the classroom and have regular Show and Share sessions where children can share their work with an adult.

In Year 2 we help the children to develop their ability to work and think independently. We build on the children’s previous school experience making sure there is continuity and progression throughout the school.
Children learn through a wide variety of activities including daily Maths and Literacy lessons. There are opportunities to read every day: individually, as part of a group or during a class lesson. Children have the chance to practise their reading skills through reading instructions, stories on the electronic whiteboard, and timetables and notices in the classroom and around the school. In the Literacy lesson we focus on a wide range of books including story, information and poetry books. We encourage children to write for different audiences and to extend their use of descriptive vocabulary. We teach the children to begin to understand how a non-fiction book works, including using an index and contents pages as well as starting to use a glossary correctly.
As part of the Maths curriculum we encourage the children to solve number work mentally, become confident in showing how they solve a problem and to use a variety of methods to reach an answer.
In Year 2 we experience a wide variety of activities: children are able to learn to play the recorder in an after-school club; they take part in a clothes show as part of our topic on ‘Rubbish’ in the Summer Term and we prepare music for an end-of-year show.
As part of learning about the world beyond the school gate we take the children on visits in Brightlingsea and beyond. We use the local environment as much as possible by visiting a local place of worship, watching the Deputy’s Parade and using the resources offered by the beach and the surrounding area.

P.E. Please ensure P.E kits are named and in school everyday. Each class has one lesson of Dance and one of Gym. Class Teachers will notify you of P.E. days. Please remove all items of jewellery, including earrings, on PE days. For newly pierced ears, please provide micro-pore tape.
Reading Please continue hearing your child read and share books with them daily. It would be helpful if you could note in the Reading Record book when you have done so.
