In Cathkin High School we are committed to giving EVERY child the support which is needed to ensure that she or he achieves the maximum possible in all areas of activity. We believe that ALL pupils have talents and we will try to recognise these and give all pupils the opportunity to succeed. We believe that YOU as parents, are the child's first and continuing teachers - and we want to work with you as partners to raise achievement in the school.

UNIFORMS

In support of many parents wishes, South Lanarkshire Council encourages all pupils to wear school uniform. The wearing of a school uniform helps promote the identity of the school in the local community and helps create an ethos of sharing pride in the school.

In addition, the wearing of a uniform helps towards increasing the protection of all pupils in the light of the need to be more security conscious in all our schools. The wearing of a uniform helps staff and the pupils to distinguish between who belongs to the school and those who may be visitors. This enables staff to approach and identify visitors more readily and helps in trying to offer a safer environment for pupils and teachers alike.

Equality of opportunity is an important aspect of the life of the school and any proposals on the wearing of a uniform will be the subject of consultation with parents, pupils, and staff.

In Cathkin High School, the wearing of school uniform is compulsory. This provides greater security, and helps to promote an identity which links the pupils to the School.

The Uniform consists of :

  • White Shirt/Blouse and School tie
  • White Polo Shirt with the School Logo
  • Black Sweatshirt with the School Logo or black cardigan
  • Black Trousers/Skirt

These items are available from the School at cost price.

There are forms of dress which are unacceptable in all schools, such as;

  • the wearing of football colours
  • clothing with slogans that may cause offence (anti-religious, symbolism or political slogans
  • clothing which advertises alchohol, tobacco or drug
  • clothing which can be deemed unsuitable in terms of Health and Safety grounds such as shell suits, dangling earrings, loose fitting clothes particularly in practical classes
  • articles of clothing that could inflict damage on other pupils or be used by others to do so
  • footwear that may damage flooring.

The Council provides support to those parents in receipt of income support, family credit, housing benefit and council tax rebate by providing financial assistance towards the purchase of school uniform/clothing.

Application forms for clothing grants are available from Q&A offices, Local Registration offices, the school or Education Resources, Almada Street, Hamilton, Telephone 01698 454545.

In Physical Education, in the interests of hygiene and safety, pupils should wear non-restrictive clothing such as shorts and T -shirts.

For outdoor activities such as Football and Hockey, a track suit and football boots are also recommended. An appropriate costume is essential for swimming.

Football strips that represent particular teams (club or country) are not permitted in school or Physical Education classes.

PARENTS ASSOCATION

There is an active Parents' Association in Cathkin High School which meets regularly on the last Tuesday of every month. All parents are invited to attend these meetings and will be made most welcome.

The Parents' Association assist the school in a number of ways.

Fund Raising:
In partnership with the School Board, the association raises money, which was donated to the school.

Parents' Evenings:
Volunteers from the Parents' Association, assisted by pupils, provide refreshments to staff and parents on Parents' Evenings and/or social occasions.

Open Evenings:
The Parents' Association organise several open evenings in different departments every session, to which all parents are invited. For example, we recently had a musical evening which was attended, and thoroughly enjoyed, by over 200 people.

Mock Interviews:
The Parents' Association have been instrumental on a number of occasions in arranging mock interviews for senior pupils.

Parents' Newsletter:
The association send out to all parents regular newsletters, giving information on their activities and also on other issues relating to the school
