Welcome to an insight into our school.
At Dartington Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School and Nursery Unit, we work as a team, with children, parents, staff and the community. Through this partnership we aim to provide a stimulating, vibrant atmosphere in which all our children can reach their full potential.

| Our vision is to enable our children to have open relationships
with each other and with adults. We help them to be
enthusiastic about their learning, feel good about themselves,
and respect every member for their contribution.
This, we feel, encourages a unity and generosity of spirit within
the School and gives everyone the opportunities to use their
abilities to the full.
Arrangements are made for children to attend acts of worship
and periods of religious education, but it is open to parents to
request that their child should be wholly or partly excused from
either or both of these activities.
We recognise the need to include sex education in the
curriculum and are also aware of the parents’ right to withdraw
their child. |
| Dartington Primary School Nursery Unit is unique in Devon. It occupies one of the few
purposebuilt
nurseries in the County. We hope the following notes will be of use but
please do not hesitate to ask the Nursery Staff for further information.
Our aims for Nursery Education are:
- To explore an interesting and happy environment in order to promote
imaginary, exploratory, and creative play and to widen the child’s experience within its
natural environment.
- To socialise with adults and other children outside their home situation and become aware
of their needs and feelings, so as to gain confidence and knowledge of themselves as
individuals.
- To increase their language and widen their vocabulary to give opportunity to listen to
spoken language in all forms (stories, poems, songs, conversation and radio broadcasts).
- To develop a physical awareness of their body through sensory motor experience and
control.
- To create an education readiness to learn by encouraging
an
encouraging mind;
logical
reasoning;
freedom
of expression;
opportunity
to learn a wide variety of skills.
Expectation of these aims will vary according to the age and ability of each child. They are
all leading to a readiness for a slightly more formal teaching approach as a child progresses
to their reception class. As a child who is learning to walk needs to crawl first, so a child
who is learning to read needs to develop a large vocabulary and eye perception first. In
order to count, a true understanding of number is required. |
| Most classes are organised in vertical groups, eg year 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6. The
staff teach all subjects within the National Curriculum. The site is split into Key Stage 1
(57
years) and Key Stage 2 (711
years). Resources are organised to support their
learning on each site, with the Library being used by both Key Stages. |
