Our principal aim at Davenies is to encourage the pursuit of excellence and the development of the whole person in a caring, supportive environment.

We do this by adopting a thorough, expansive and imaginative approach to all aspects of school life We seek to instil in the boys a sense of curiosity and confidence so that they can drive their own learning and make the most of their ability, wherever it lies.

At Davenies we place particular emphasis on developing caring children who do not merely put themselves first, but who know how to behave appropriately and considerately. Ultimately, we recognise that we are not only preparing the boys for successful entry to senior schools, but also for life outside and beyond school.

Education should be exciting and Davenies is an exciting school. The boys find success in many areas, both on the sports field and within the classroom. The facilities are excellent, the class sizes small and the site attractive. However, just as we endeavour to help each boy progress and to make the most of the opportunities available, as a school we are constantly looking for areas where we can continue to build upon the excellent education we offer.

Admissions Procedure

Entry points: Entry to the school is at the discretion of the Headmaster and subject to availability of places. These procedures apply at the two main points of entry: Reception (4+) and Year 7 (11+), and also to candidates for occasional vacancies in any other year group.

Registration: 
On initial enquiry parents are sent a prospectus and covering letter inviting them to meet the Headmaster and Head of Pre- Prep (if appropriate) and also have a tour of the school. Entry into Reception is always over-subscribed and so it is important that registration formalities are completed at the earliest opportunity.                  
Prospective parents also receive a Registration Form with their prospectus information which should be completed and returned with a non-refundable £50 registration fee. This is acknowledged and the place (or Waiting List place) is provisionally confirmed in writing.
Twelve months prior to joining Reception (usually less for other years) prospective entrants are requested to pay a fee deposit of £500 (which will be refunded on the final leaver’s fee account) upon receipt of which their places are confirmed as guaranteed, subject to satisfactory completion of assessment procedures set out below.
In the event of a place not being available for the prospective pupil’s name is carried forward on the waiting lists until such time as he can be accommodated, or his name is withdrawn.

Assessment: procedures for entry into different year groups are as follows:

Reception: entrants to Reception are not formally assessed, but the Head of Pre- Prep will visit the prospective pupils at their playgroups/ nurseries to be informed about their suitability for the Davenies environment. If as a result of discussing a pupil with the nursery and seeing him in situ there are any concerns then the Head of Pre- Prep will discuss these concerns with the parents.
For all entrants above Reception level reports from the previous school will be obtained.

Years 1 and 2: entrants to Pre- Prep after Reception will be invited to spend a day with their prospective classmates where they will meet the Head of Pre- Prep and be asked to do some reading, writing and Maths.

Year 3 to Year 6: entrants to the school in Year 3 and above will sit short papers in English and Maths. These papers are to inform the school as to whether or not the prospective pupil can work within the parameters of a class at Davenies and where he would later be placed in sets. Applicants will also be invited to spend a day with their prospective classmates.

Year 7 entry and Scholarship: at the end of Year 6 some pupils will leave to take up places at local Grammar schools and so there are usually vacancies for Year 7 entry. The assessment procedure is as above. The school expects entrants to Year 7 to continue into Year 8 and sit Common Entrance, Scholarship or separate Entrance exams set by senior schools.

Familiarisation and events: Pre- Prep entrants are given the opportunity of attending various events during the Lent and Summer terms to meet staff and other new pupils and parents. These will include an Open Morning, an Induction Morning and the Pre- prep sports day.

Davenies also runs a second hand uniform store for items of Davenies school uniform which are in good, saleable condition. It is located in the School House and open several times a term, usually on a Monday afternoon from 3pm to 4.45pm.

The uniform store will be open on the following dates in 2007 between 3 and 4.45pm: Monday 30 April, Monday 14 May, Monday 4 June, Monday 18 June, and Monday 2 July It will also be open on the morning of Tuesday 3 July, the induction day for new boys joining Davenies.

Pre-Prep

Boys join us in the Davenies Pre-Prep in the academic year in which they turn five. This very important part of the school consists of two parallel classes of twenty in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. All our classes consist of mixed ability pupils, with the average age in each of the year group classes being roughly the same. We are fortunate in having generous levels of staffing; boys are taught by form teachers, who are all supported by teaching assistants. Academic progress is carefully monitored and, where necessary, boys are given extra individual tuition.

In the Pre-Prep, we believe firmly in the importance of building solid foundations for a child's future education, by ensuring that sound habits of learning are developed when they are young. Structured class teaching and creative play are important aspects of the learning process in the early years, together with the personal and social development of each boy. As the children develop, increasing emphasis is placed on the more formal elements of literacy and numeracy, as well as the all-round development of each individual. Art, Music Sport and Drama are also an integral part of the curriculum in the Pre-Prep. In a warm, friendly, cheerful environment, the boys' confidence is nurtured and achievements, however small, are recognised and rewarded.

The Davenies site is spacious and secure; a separate, wooded play area incorporating two large climbing frames, a basketball net and two 'springers' enable young boys to develop their fine motor skills, while enjoying the company of their peers at playtime.
