The Pattern of A-level Courses
At DCGS, all Sixth Form students follow A-level courses. All A-level subjects consist of two parts: an AS, which will normally be completed in Year 12 and an A2, which is completed in Year 13.
All A-levels are modular. There are 3 modules in each AS and a further 3 modules in A2 subjects. At DCGS, the three AS modules will normally be completed by the end of Year 12. Modules can be retaken, and the better grade will count towards the final award. The A2 modules will be taken in January and June of Year 13. The intention of the bodies who devised the AS/A2 system was that AS should be at a level between GCSE and A-level.
The vast majority of students study 4 main AS courses and a course from the Enrichment Programme. This is a compulsory part of the curriculum and offers an additional qualification on only 1 period a week. We hope to offer General Studies AS, Further Mathematics AS, BTEC iMedia and Asset Languages (Chinese or Russian) in this programme and students will be able to express a preference once they have been offered a place. For some students this programme may be too demanding and they can choose General Studies as one of their 4 AS Options.
In Year 13 students normally continue to study 4 A2 subjects. as well as General Studies, assuming that they have successfully completed the AS course.
In some cases students choose to continue with three subjects from AS to A2 and start a new AS subject in Year 13, thereby ending up with 2 AS and three full A2 qualifications by the end of Year 13. If you are considering this option you should speak to Mr Clare or Mr Holloway.
Games, PSHE, tutorial work and a current affairs lecture are also part of the post 16 curriculum.
Combinations of Subjects
It is not possible for us to offer all combinations of subjects. Rather than publish a list of permitted combinations, we try to arrange the grouping of subjects at a later stage to accommodate as many student choices as possible. Once choice forms are submitted, we will let you know whether we can offer you a place for that combination as soon as possible.
Combinations which include one or more subjects for which we anticipate running only one set can be especially difficult to accommodate. These subjects are: Art, Human Biology, Electronics, German, Government and Politics, ICT, Applied ICT, Law, Further Mathematics, Music, Music Technology, Physical Education and Sport, Spanish. You are advised to nominate alternative combinations if your choice includes more than one of these.
Entry Requirements
Since studying four AS level courses is academically demanding, there is a minimum academic requirement for entry to the Sixth Form. This is:
- A total GCSE points score of 356 points from the eight best subject results (A* = 58, A = 52, B = 46 etc).
- The applicant should have achieved at least a Grade B in each of the four subjects he wishes to study at AS level.
Sixth Form Applications
Introduction
The majority of external applications to the Sixth Form are conducted electronically. We therefore invite all external candidates to use our electronic application form to submit their details for consideration. By applying electronically, you ensure that your details will be entered accurately and quickly into our application system, avoiding the delay of paper-based applications.
Electronic Applications
In order to apply, you must complete the following form in full. Any absent information will mean the form will not be submitted for consideration. We require information about yourself, your current school (including contact details), the subjects you are studying at GCSE and your A-Level choices. You will also be asked to supply some further information about your extra-curricular activities and future plans to help support your application.
When you have submitted your application, you will be given an Application Reference Number. Please write this number down as you will need it at any point when you contact the school about your admission. If the application form does not give you a reference number, your application has not been correctly submitted and you may need to re-submit it. If you do receive a reference number, your application has been submitted correctly. Please do not ring the school to confirm that your application has been received in this case.
Decisions
Being a popular and successful school, Dr Challoner's receives a large number of applications to join the Sixth Form each year. All applications will be considered in due course. Please do not follow up your application by contacting the school unless you have a specific and urgent question. Decisions about offers are taken at the end of the spring term. All offers given at that time are conditional, meaning they are reliant upon candidates achieving particular results in their GCSEs. Further details about these conditions would accompany any offer that is made.
