Introduction: Our school and its neighbourhood

Hamsey Community Primary School is a small primary school in the village of Cooksbridge, near Lewes. It was built in 1907 to replace the original school in nearby Offham, which is now a private house. Many of our pupils come from the village of Cooksbridge but others travel from neighbouring towns and villages, such as Lewes, Chailey, Plumpton, Newick, Ringmer and East Chiltington.

We are part of a cluster group that includes nine local primary schools and Chailey Secondary School. We are called the "Chailey Cluster" because most of our children go to Chailey Secondary School after Year 6. As a cluster group, we share in-service days, resources and expertise and we also meet regularly for sports tournaments, music festivals and curriculum enrichment.

We are very proud to have achieved two special Awards recently:

• The Artsmark Silver Award, for all the work we have done to enrich the curriculum with music, dance, art and drama, (May 2004);
• The Healthy Schools Silver Award, for all our developments in Personal, Social and Health Education, (July 2004).

At our school we have a large playground, (above).

We have a Healthy Eating Code and a Healthy Tuck Shop!

We have a lot of interesting climbing apparatus on the field, (above).

We also have an enormous playing field,  

and several garden areas where the children grow herbs, vegetables and flowers. 

We have an ICT room where we can all practise our skills on the computers or use them in our class work. 

Story Club

Story Club is held in Class 1 every Wednesday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. We invite pre-school children who will be starting school in September 2006, and their parents, to come and join in the fun! Please ring Mrs. Dymond on 01273 400370 to check whether there are any places available.
