Ilfracombe Infant and Nursery School is one of the largest infant schools in the county of Devon, with 362 children under 7 years on roll. We cater for all children in the area as we are the only infant school!
We believe schools should help children develop their skills and personality fully, teach them about their own and other people's rights and prepare them for adult life.
We hope you find our site informative and enjoyable.
In 1972 schools in Ilfracombe were re-organised. A purpose built comprehensive was constructed and the former Grammar School building was taken over by the Junior School. The Secondary School became Ilfracombe Infants School.
The main building, of red brick, comprises kitchen, administration areas, library, a small hall, medical room and 4 classrooms. Seven substandard outside classrooms were demolished in the summer of 1997 and a major capital building programme comprising 10 new classrooms, services and a hall was added to the existing building in 1997/98 all of which now have wheelchair access. In February of 1998 the Family Centre was resited at the rear of the school. We now have a fantastic building with excellent facilities and resources.
Success
The school has good academic levels of achievement and has been recognised by Ofsted and the county as being a very good school. In recent years we have twice been awarded the DFES School Achievement award in recognition of our high standards. In 2002 the school gained recognition of positive staff development that creates an excellent climate for working within by achieving The Investors in People Award. The school has recently gained a Gold Award for our Travel Plan and we now hold an Artsmark Gold Award. We work in a thriving, creative environment with enthused and empowered staff. Our Teaching Assistants are a highly skilled team, receiving regular staff development. The majority of our lunchtime assistants have a NVQ in play leadership. Teachers are involved in county initiatives leading staff training for other schools.
