It is delivered through a variety of teaching and learning styles providing ample scope for the individual child’s development. The national 5-14 development programme provides staff with a framework within which to organise programmes of study. The main areas of the curriculum are developed as follows:

Equal Opportunities

All pupils regardless of race, colour, religion, gender or disability should participate equally in the life of Kirkhill Primary and find motivation, challenge, success, enjoyment and security.

Assessment

The school’s use of formative and summative assessment enables the teacher to ascertain each child’s progress. Tests may be given from time to time and are intended to be helpful to teacher, child and parent. National Assessments in Mathematics and Language are administered according to National Guidelines. These assessments are intended to monitor pupils’ progress and to relate the standards of the school to national standards. Baseline Assessment is carried out early in P1 and Screening (detailed assessment) takes place later in P1 and again in P2. In addition pupils at P3, P5 and P7 are assessed using standardised tests which are administered in all East Renfrewshire schools as part of the Authority’s policy to raise attainment.

Raising Attainment

As part of a national drive to raise attainment all schools have targets to be met in reading, writing and mathematics. The Early Intervention programme together with a number of other strategies have ensured steady progress and assist in the school’s programme of continuous improvement. 

Records of Pupil Progress

Records of pupils’ progress, which are of a confidential nature, are retained in an enclosed file. Access is restricted to authorised persons. Normal recording of pupils’ work is carried out and retained by the teacher. Parents wishing to examine confidential reports should contact the Head Teacher.

Enthusiastic staff and parents offer pupils a wide range of extra curricular activities during lunch, breaks and after school. Last session over 400 pupils took part in

Pupils who are learning instruments either in school or at home are encouraged to participate in musical events during the year. There are also opportunities for pupils to be involved in junior and senior choirs.

Parents are encouraged to take an active part in the activities of the school. From the induction days before your child starts at Kirkhill, until the last days of P7, you are invited to work in partnership with your child and staff by participating in the Personal Learning Process, sharing your talents, joining us at workshop activities, assisting with the P.T.A. and helping with homework.
