Letham is a small rural school in the village of Letham in Fife.
Children from the villages of Collessie and the Bow of Fife and the surrounding countryside come to our school as well as children in Letham.
It is situated at the top of School Brae and has lovely views over the Howe of Fife. As well as walking up the steep brae to school we also have to climb 36 steps. It certainly keeps us fit!
Our school is over 100 years old. Two years ago an extension was added so that the pupils have lovely new toilet facilities. There is also a reception office/ staff room.
We have two large classrooms in school, an activity area, a small, well-stocked library, a dining room and a kitchen, where our cook makes tasty nutritious meals.
We have lots of computers in school and use these to help us learn.
We don’t have a gym hall but each week we go to the Sports hall in Cupar, where we can use the equipment.
We don’t have lots of rules at Letham, but the children think about what rules we need to make Letham a happy place. The most important of our rules is to HAVE FUN.
Letham - An Eco School
When you come to Letham you will see our 'Green Flag' flying at the top of School Brae.

Everyone at Letham is aware that we need to look after the Environment and take more care of the World's Natural Resources. Although we are a small school we know that even small changes can make a difference. We are part of the Eco Schools project which identifies 7 areas of concern for the school to investigate. They are Litter, School Grounds, Energy, Waste Minimisation, Transport, Water and Health & Well-Being.
Last session we were awarded our first Green Flag and now we are working towards our second. We have an Eco committee of staff, friends and pupils to help us. Here are some of the activities we do:
Litter - by Rebekah P7
Every week a different litter team goes outside to look for any loose pieces of litter around the grounds. This happens every Friday and we are noticing a big difference. We have also got two new bins - one in a teddy bear shape which is at the front for the little ones. The little ones like the teddy bear so they use it a lot more than the old bin. The other bin is round the back for the big ones. At first there was lots of litter but now there is very little.
Energy by Thomas P5
We have to stop wasting oil, coal & gas. We use these to produce electricity but they are running out. We need to use renewable resources like water, wind, sun - if we use wind to make electricity there will still be wind left.
We also need to stop wasting and start saving for example, put the light off when the sun is shining, use energy efficient light bulbs.
School Grounds
We have planted daffodil bulbs in a circle on the banking so that visitors in the spring will be welcomed by a smiley face of daffodils.
We are replanting our spider willow sculpture. It is a popular playing place for the younger children and each year we prune the willow and make Christmas stars etc with it.

There is also a picnic table in the playground where we can eat out packed lunches on sunny days.
Health & Well Being
We all try to keep healthy at Letham and to exercise regularly. We do Wake Up Shake Up in the mornings, go to PE every week and have various Sports Activities at After School Clubs.
We also have a Healthy Tuckshop run byP6/7. We have smoothies, bread sticks, fresh fruit cups and cereal bars. Whenever possible we buy Fairly Traided products for our Tuckshop.
