The striking modern architectural design of the school ensures that the needs of the pupils and staff are fully accommodated. This includes:

LVS is one of two schools (the other being The Elvian School in Reading) owned by the Licensed Trade Charity (LTC), which was set up in 1793 to care for people from within the licensed drinks trade. The charity opened its first school in London over 200 years ago and has continued to invest in children’s education ever since. Members of the LTC are entitled to a discount on school fees, means tested bursaries are also available to anyone working within the licensed drinks trade. The schools are also open to the general public

History

The Licensed Victuallers’ School in Ascot is a unique independent day and boarding school for 900 pupils aged 5 to 18. Its co-educational history stretches back over 200 years.

The school’s aim to provide a caring yet challenging environment for each of its pupils was set at its foundation by the proprietors, the Society of Licensed Victuallers, in 1803. The Society recently merged with the Licensed Victuallers National Homes, forming the Licensed Trade Charity.

The Society of Licensed Victuallers, like the LTC today, was from the beginning a charity whose remit was the charitable support of the young, elderly and sick within the retails drinks industry. To support the children of those working in the trade a school was founded in Kennington in Lambeth in a “wholesome and airy environment”. As industrialisation increased and London spread outwards, the school moved to another green site in Slough. When history repeated itself the school moved again in the late 1980’s to Ascot.

Each move gave the SLV an ideal opportunity to incorporate the latest educational thinking in the design of the school in order both to satisfy its charitable obligations and to provide a modern facility able to compete and perform successfully in the independent school market place. The school’s rising pupil role is a testament to this success.

In spite of the school’s modernity it maintains strong links to its proprietors, the LTC, and the drinks industry whose generosity continues to support many children from the licensed trade, adding to the heterogeneous mix of pupils from a wide range of backgrounds.  Through the Society’s advocacy a Royal Charter was granted in 1836 and this Royal patronage continues to this day.
