Moira House is set within 15 acres of attractively landscaped grounds, on the outskirts of the historic town of Eastbourne on the south coast of England.

Eastbourne is only 75 minutes from London by train and has easy access to two international airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.

Founded in 1875, Moira House welcomes girls from the age of three to eighteen with full, weekly or flexi-boarding offered from the age of nine. The school takes its name from the first premises in Surrey which belonged to an Irish nobleman from County Down, the Earl of Moira.

We pride ourselves on our excellent pastoral care and careful attention to the needs of each individual and provide as many opportunities as possible for girls to develop their full potential within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The Moira House Academic Curriculum offers breadth and variety. It provides girls with a challenging and stimulating programme of study tailored to their individual needs and interests.

In the Lower forms of the Senior School, the curriculum is broad, following national guidelines, and also including Latin, Drama and the introduction of three separate sciences at Form 3 (year 9).

Twenty subjects are offered for GCSE and a similar number for A level. Pass rates are very high and almost every girl moves on to university, including Oxbridge. The Moira House Career Counselling Service is well-known and highly respected for the quality of the advice and support it offers. Girls aged thirteen upwards are given every assistance towards both higher education and career opportunities.

Overseas students have the support of a strong EFL department which offers intensive courses, Business English and access to the full suite of Cambridge language exams.

Girls with special needs will also receive additional help and support.

Scholarships and exhibitions are awarded at the start of each year and bursaries are also available.

The daily extra-curricular programme complements academic work. It provides endless opportunity and it is the aim of the school that each girl should taste a new activity each term.

As well as pursuing personal interests, girls can try trampolining, community service, orienteering, salsa dancing and judo, in addition to swing band, drama workshop and arts and crafts. Another popular activity is cookery, (Food Technology is also offered at exam level in the sixth form) where girls enjoy experimenting in a modern kitchen in small groups of eight.

Many girls also choose to take an active part in the Community Service programme which includes visits to the sick and needy.

In addition, there is a successful Young Enterprise and a very lively Debating Society. Moira House girls have gained national standing in achieving distinction in the British Telecom International Newsday Challenge and in the Motorola Youth Parliament Competition.

There are excellent links with other schools through the Youth Council and Rotary Club events.

To meet the needs of individual families we offer full, weekly and flexible boarding. School House provides attractive and comfortable accommodation. Boston House offers single or double study bedrooms and the Link is a small, homely boarding house for some of our international girls studying English on the foundation language course prior to starting A levels.

Great importance is placed on pastoral care, every girl is very much an individual and close communication between staff, parents and girls is encouraged.

The Nursery occupies a spacious, well-equipped and self-contained unit adjoining the Junior School.  There are colourful activity rooms for play, "quiet" rooms for rest and lovely gardens for children to enjoy. There is also access to an indoor swimming pool for swimming lessons and a large hall for music and dancing.

Girls from two to four may join the Nursery which provides a happy, stimulating and safe environment in which to take those vital first steps away from home.

From the age of four, the girls can join the Reception class where they work and play in small groups according to their ability and are encouraged to begin their individual development.

The structure of the Junior School has been sensitively planned to welcome younger girls, from the age of four to eleven, into the school community. The lower classes are very small, usually twelve to fourteen girls, who spend most of the day with their own teacher.

Education at this stage is a foundation for the future and as broad as possible; primary emphasis is placed on the core subjects of the National Curriculum but oral French, Music, Drama, Design Technology, PE and swimming are also included in the timetable.  However education during these early years is flexible and each girl’s day is planned according to her needs and circumstances.

For the first three years the girls follow a broad curriculum before being advised on the selection of their options for GCSE.  The support system of committed caring and inspirational teachers together with outstanding facilities ensures each girl has the opportunity to excel.

The well resourced library and extensive computer facilities for research are always available to the girls for private study.  Close monitoring and assessment procedures maintain the continuing partnership between home and school which is at the heart of the Moira House ethos.

A whole new approach to school life is adopted in the sixth form. Girls move into Boston House which is a college style environment where day students and boarders work and socialise together.  Life is challenging as hard work is expected but girls are also offered plenty of opportunities to relax.  There is a huge choice of sporting and leisure activities alongside the more serious theatre trips and debating in the Lit. and Phil. Society. One very popular attraction is Young Enterprise, a programme in which girls set up a company and run their own business, supported by local, professional advisers.

The Careers Centre is housed within Boston House and a highly experienced Careers Counsellor is always available to discuss university applications and career choices. Yet the Senior School is not just about academic achievement. There is also emphasis on personal growth and everyone is encouraged to broaden their horizons in the way that best suits them.
