| ABOUT US
Whether your son or daughter is severely or profoundly deaf, he or she will benefit from our specialist education and care. From their first day at Ovingdean Hall School your child will be supported by teams of highly experienced staff skilled in caring for hearing loss and many additional special needs. These include secondary physical disabilities, learning, social or emotional difficulties.
Your child will be taught using auditory / oral teaching methods using a combination of specialist teaching and the very latest audio technology. He or she will learn to communicate through speaking and listening.
We are registered with the Department for Education and Skills as a Non Maintained Special School for deaf children aged from 9 to 19+ and we are a registered Charity.
CARING FOR YOUR CHILD
We aim to provide your child with a safe, balanced and stimulating social environment valuing each child as an individual and treating them with respect and dignity.
Your child will be provided with the opportunity to express his or her social, creative and sporting interests. His or her needs and wishes will be discussed with you so areas where extra help may be needed are identified and support allocated. The after school environment is fun and relaxed. The children here blossom by developing friendships with their deaf peers and good relationships with the adults working alongside them.

| We will provide your child with a fun and rewarding school experience that is individually tailored to meet their needs. We focus on developing your child’s social and communication skills as much as academic or vocational achievement. By developing your child’s self esteem and confidence he or she will be best equipped to lead a happy and successful life in the hearing world.
Through skilled teaching and additional special help where needed, pupils are able to access the full National Curriculum. Your child will have the opportunity to gain as many qualifications as he or she can. All of our teaching staff are qualified teachers of the deaf and subject specialists.
We follow auditory and oral teaching methods which means we help children to develop their listening and speaking skills. High quality hearing aid management maximises their residual hearing. All staff help to support the work of our Speech and Language Therapists. Constructive relationships between pupils and staff and a supportive caring environment give children the confidence to use and experiment with their voices. All interaction between staff and pupils is through speaking and listening with the help of visual lesson plans, interactive activities and the latest hearing technology.

| Your child’s education is a partnership between the family and all of the staff at Ovingdean Hall School. Your child should thrive in an environment where there is constant dialogue between you and everyone who is involved in your child’s education and care.
Many parents live a long way from Ovingdean Hall School but we will always maintain regular contact with you throughout the time your child is at Ovingdean Hall School. Teaching and care staff will telephone you every day, if necessary, and we promise that we will contact you regularly to let you know about your child’s progress.
Your child will always have access to a telephone and a minicom in their boarding accommodation or in school. Your child will also have a student diary which, among other uses, records activities and achievements which is passed between school and family each week.
We operate an open door policy where parents are welcome to visit and can contact the Head or Deputy Head to talk about their child at any time.

| We support post 16 students through vocational and academic courses as well as helping them develop independent living skills.
PSHE studies enforce and build on your practical skills covering money management and healthy living. There is a strong emphasis on preparing for work with training designed to offer you the best possible preparation in all aspects of seeking and maintaining employment. This is reinforced by carefully selected work placements, where you can not only discover your future career direction, but can also experience the social interaction and structure of the workplace.
You will be encouraged to organise your own social activities. Current students often visit theatre, concerts, cinema, gym and other leisure venues. You will also be encouraged to use the cooking and laundry facilities provided. You will be given the opportunity to extend your social skills both in the hearing and deaf community. One of the biggest benefits of attending Further education here is that you are encouraged to live and work independently, making your own decisions in an informed way.
You will also receive speech and language assistance which together with training will allow you to manage and take responsibility for your own audiological needs.

Your child will be taught in a class of no more than eight pupils grouped according to ability, language and literacy level, communication skills and social and emotional needs.
To ensure your child has a consistent learning experience, he or she will be taught by their class teacher in their own classroom for most subjects. This will help your child gain confidence in the use of residual hearing and lip reading skills before moving on to a wider range of teaching staff in key stage 4.
All children study the full National Curriculum including French and Music. A key emphasis will be placed on helping your child develop social skills. He or she will have one to one sessions to address language, literacy, speech or other needs with specialist staff. Cross–curricular themes will enhance your child’s understanding of subjects.
Class Teachers liaise with Care Staff every day so all staff are working together, with your child, to maximise his or her academic and social progress.

Your child will be grouped in a tutor group that meets for registration every day and once a week for tutorial time. He or she will be able to choose subjects to study while also having the opportunity to undertake three work experience placements. Your child will also continue to receive individual specialised sessions to address language, literacy, speech or other needs with specialist staff.
We can currently offer your child GCSE courses in English and English Literature, Maths, Science, Drama, Art and Design, Design Technology, Humanities (a combination of history and geography) Information and Communication Technology (double award) and Physical Education. As an alternative to GCSE we offer Certificate of Education Courses on a wider range of subjects.
General studies are followed by all students which incorporates citizenship, life skills, work related learning and preparation for work experience and is accredited through the Unit Award Scheme.
Care staff are fully briefed by teaching staff. This means they can support your child’s learning by assisting with homework where needed.
