Our Mission Statement

St John's is a Catholic School which aims to impart Christian values in preparing students to reach their full potential as members of the church and as responsible citizens.

St John's aspires to value all its students irrespective of age, gender, background or ability. In so doing, it endeavours to motivate, support and inspire them in their personal, spiritual and educational growth.

It is an expressed intention to unite the staff, parents and students behind agreed school policies designed to ensure a high quality educational service.

As a Technology College, St John's aims to raise the technological awareness and skills of its students in preparing them for a rapidly changing world of employment.

School Admission Policy

The governing body of St John's Catholic Comprehensive School is the Admissions authority for this school.

In determining admissions the governors seek to preserve the religious character of this Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Technology College.

Where there are insufficient places available to meet all parental preferences, priority will be given to applications in the following order:

(a)

Children who are baptised as Catholics or have been formally received into the Catholic Church and who attend a Catholic Primary School.

(b)

Children who are baptised as Catholics or have been formally received into the Catholic Church who have Special Educational Needs or other special circumstances including those who are Looked after Children (in the care of the local authority).

(c)

Children who are baptised as Catholics or have been formally received into the Catholic Church and who do not attend a Catholic Primary School.

(d)

Children who have not been baptised as Catholics nor have been formally received into the Catholic Church, but who are attending a Catholic Primary School.

(e)

Brothers and sisters of children who are of other Christian denominations who will already be attending the school at the time of admission.

(f)

Brothers and sisters of children who are of other Faith traditions who will already be attending the school at the time of admission.

(g)

Children who have not been baptised as Catholics nor have been formally received into the Catholic Church who have Special Educational Needs or other special circumstances including those who are Looked after Children (in the care of the local authority).

(h)

Children of other denominations who do not have a brother or sister at the school.

(i)

Children of other Faith traditions who do not have a brother or sister at the school.

(j)

Other children.

If applicants are seeking admission under any of the criteria (a) to (c) above, they will be asked to provide evidence that the child is a baptised Catholic or has been formally received into the Catholic church.

If applicants are seeking admission under any of the criteria (d), (e), (f), (h) or (j) above, they will be asked for a letter of support from their minister or Faith leader, or suitable equivalent. For Christian applicants a baptismal certificate should be provided wherever possible.

Where there are places available for some, but not all applicants within a particular criterion, the minister of Faith's supporting letter will be the deciding factor, with preference being given to those whose letter of support from their minister of Faith is judged to be stronger in evidence of faith adherence.

Parents who are refused a place for their child have a stautory right of appeal. Further details of the appeals process are available by writing to the Chairman of the Governors at the school address.

It must be stressed that formal written applications for admission must be made on the form provided by the Local Education Authority and returned to them by the stated date. Places will then be allocated by strict application of the above criteria, with no reference to the date of application. Parents will be notified as to whether or not their child has been allocated a place.

Our Achievements

The above graph is one of many indicators which makes St John's community proud of its reputation for sustained improvement in academic standards at all Key Stages.
