Welcome to Swaffham Prior C E (C) Primary School
Our School
 Swaffham Prior Church of England Primary serves the surrounding village, plus the neighbouring village of Reach. Many children come from the nearby village of Burwell, or even further afield.
Our school is a voluntary controlled Church of England school, belonging to the Ely Diocese. Being a small school, teaching and support staff know the children well. Our number on roll is normally around 100 pupils who are currently taught in one of four classes.
Our aim is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum in which all children can progress and enjoy learning. We promote respect for oneself and one another.
Our setting is rural, bordering on Fenland; our varied local community acts as a learning resource for both history and geography based topics. We welcome in parents and members of the community to support children's learning.
We look forward to welcoming all new children to our school, and trust that they will find a warm, friendly and hardworking atmosphere in which they can develop their skills as far as possible, and discover a long-term enjoyment of learning.

| Children have three stages within the primary school:
- The Foundation Stage which leads on from pre school provision (reception year, rising 5)
- Key Stage One (year 1 and 2, ages 5-7)
- Key Stage Two (years 3-6, ages 7 -11)
The Foundation CurriculumThe Foundation Curriculum encompasses the Early Learning Goals for children up to the age of five and leads into the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. Areas of learning include Mathematics, Communication and Literacy, Knowledge and Understanding of the Word, Creative and Physical development and Personal and Emotional Development.
Children have ongoing assessment using the Foundation Stage profile. This helps the class teacher in providing a suitable curriculum to meet the children's needs and identifying next learning steps.
The National CurriculumThe National Curriculum is taught mainly from Year One onwards and divides the subjects taught into two groups: core subjects and foundation subjects. The core subjects are:
and these are at the centre of what is taught, providing the skills necessary for all the other subjects: Design Technology, History, Geography, Art, Physical Education and Music. In addition it is recommended that Religious Education should also be taught in accordance with Local Education Authority guidelines and Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE + C) as laid down by non-statutory Government guidelines.
For each of its subjects, the National Curriculum has two main components, Programmes of study and Attainment targets. Programmes of study are provided for each of the Key Stages in primary school and set out what children should learn. Attainment targets set out strands of learning for a subject and provide levels of attainment against which progress can be assessed.
Standard Attainment TasksChildren are formally assessed at different points within their school career to assess their achievements; [a seven year-old would normally be expected to achieve level 2, an 11 year-old, level 4]. Standard Attainment Tasks (SATs), take place towards the end of Key Stages (KS) in children's school life, KS1 at the age of seven, and KS2 at 11. In Key Stage 1 tests are used to support teacher assessments.
Results of SATs or teacher assessments show overall levels of attainment in the areas of reading, writing, maths and science and are reported to parents with the child's annual profile in July.

| Where we can support a topic with a visit we do so; Bury St Edmunds is a focus point in geography in KS2, and the Cecil Higgins Museum supports the Roman history unit. Recent visits include a river day at the local Upware study centre. We also use our local community a lot, including the local Church.
Each summer term, FoSPS support the cost of coach travel and enable pupils to go further afield, such as visiting the butterfly farm at Bedford.
We also have regular visitors in - to show how a person of a different faith might celebrate, how the Ancient Greeks might have lived, plus theatre and orchestral groups.
  Through our involvement with Circle Link (the local schools), we organise sporting events as well as drama and activity based days.
We also have regular involvement from East Cambs Sport Development who provide coaching for the older children in areas such as football, hockey, tag rugby and tennis. Local tournaments are organised and for the past two years we have reached the final of the hockey.
In addition, we run or facilitate after-school clubs. These vary from term to term but have included:
