Welcome to Thornhill Primary School

Thornhill Primary School is situated to the north of Cardiff city, in an elevated position with views over the city and the Bristol Channel. The school has its own playing fields and within the grounds there is a natural conservation area that provides unique opportunities for scientific study. The school’s catchment area is semi-rural although the new housing developments that have been ongoing during recent years have to some extent changed the outlook.

The school has a thriving PTA dedicated to establishing strong links between Home and School. Although highly successful as a fund raising body, the PTA is equally concerned with activities that develop social links with school.

Events vary from a highly organised Christmas and Summer Fayre to the more informal activities. The PTA has contributed significantly to the high profile and positive identity that Thornhill Primary School has acquired in a relatively short period of time. The school highly values the Home/School partnership that has developed and the free flow of information that takes place in an atmosphere of understanding and openness.

The general welfare and happiness of the child is paramount and by working together at home and in school we share in our commitment to the success of our children.

ADMISSION

The County Council is the Admissions Authority for all maintained Primary, Junior and Infant Schools and the Council is committed to providing local schools for local children where possible. All admissions are approved in writing by the Chief Schools Officer.

Children are normally admitted to Reception classes in the September following their fourth birthday, and may attend on a full-time basis.

It is common practice for parents to approach the headteacher of their preferred school and the headteacher will make a note of the request. Parents will be advised of admission arrangements during the Summer Term. No firm guarantee can be given that the parents’ choice can be met in every case. Class sizes are limited by regulation to a maximum of 30 pupils and schools are not normally allowed to exceed their standard admission number.

Towards the end of the Summer Term prior to admission, parents are invited to a meeting at the school to meet staff and receive information about “Starting School”. Arrangements are made for the children to spend time in the class situation with the staff who will be teaching them when they start school.

Children living within the school catchment area are normally allocated a place at the school, but parents are advised to register their children well in advance. Parents living outside the catchment area who wish their children to attend the school may apply in writing to the Chief Schools’ Officer, County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff, CF10 4UW.

Section 6 of the Education Act states that the LEA is wholly responsible for the admission of pupils. Governing Bodies have no role to play in this matter.

Further information about admissions may be found in the booklet “Admission to Infant and Junior Schools – Information for Parents”. A copy of this booklet can be obtained from Pupil Services, County Hall.

CURRICULUM

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON INDIVIDUAL SUBJECTS, PLEASE REFER TO THE SEPARATE CURRICULUM MENU

The school curriculum is based upon the National Curriculum in Wales (Curriculum 2000) and the Programmes of Study necessary for delivering that Curriculum.

It emphasises the importance of Key Skills – Reading, Writing, Numeracy and Information Technology. Literacy is seen as the key to high standards across the curriculum.

The National Curriculum applies to children of compulsory school age. In Cardiff children are admitted to the ‘Reception’ year in the September following their fourth birthday.

The ‘Reception’ year children follow a specific part of the National Curriculum known as ‘Desirable Outcomes’. Desirable Outcomes is divided into 6 broad areas for development – relevant for all Early Years children until they are ready to embark upon the mainstream subject lead National Curriculum.

The subjects studied in the National Curriculum are:-

§ English
§ Mathematics
§ Science
§ Design and Technology
§ History
§ Geography
§ Music
§ Art
§ Information Technology
§ Physical Education
§ Welsh (as a 2nd language)
§ PSE (Personal & Social Education)

English, Maths and Science are known as the Core Subjects. The others are known as the Foundation Subjects.

All pupils in mainstream classes follow a programme of work that includes all the subjects. Each subject contains a range of content and skills to be covered at the appropriate key stage and this forms the basis of our school curriculum.

Each year group follows a Scheme of Work for each subject that has been carefully planned with lesson objectives and assessment procedures included.

Pupils are taught in a class situation with group work, paired activities and individual assignments undertaken as and when appropriate. It is school policy to provide some classroom support for every class in the school. Each reception class has a full-time Teacher’s Aide. The Special Needs Coordinator operates a timetable that provides classroom support for pupils who need assistance with the basic skills.

Classes are organised according to age groups.

Early Years - 4-5 years old - Reception Class(es)

Key Stage 1 - 5-7 years old - Years 1 and 2

Key Stage 2 - 7-11 years old - Years 3 - 6

Our school curriculum is organised so that there is continuity between the two stages. We view the learning process as a continuum that commences as soon as the child is admitted to school and is an ongoing process throughout the whole time that the child is here. The links developed through our primary/secondary liaison helps continuity and progression in the learning process when pupils transfer to the secondary sector.

UNIFORM

Parents at Thornhill are very much in favour of a school uniform and support it 100%. The following has been adopted:

Autumn, Winter and Spring

Mid grey trousers or mid grey skirt, white shirt/blouse or polo shirt, jade green sweatshirt (2 styles).

Spring and Summer

Mid grey trousers/green and white striped dress, white or jade polo shirt.
The jade sweatshirt is appropriate for wearing throughout the year.

Please ensure that all garments are clearly marked with your child’s name and it would be most helpful if jackets could have loops sewn inside the neck area as when jackets and coats are hung by their hoods they invariably end up on the floor of the cloakroom area.

All items of school uniform may be purchased from:

JM Textiles

Penarth
Vale of Glamorgan

Tel 02920709688
At Thornhill Primary we consider hairstyles
to be part of our uniform and respectfully
request that parents support us by not send-
ing children to school with hair cut into
outrageous styles or coloured in outlandish
colours.
The wearing of jewellery is discouraged.
In physical education and games, jewellery can be a source of danger, in particular earrings and rings. If earrings have to be worn then they must be restricted to the small ‘sleeper’ or ‘stud’ type so that the risk of injury is minimised. Accidents have been known to occur in school playgrounds and as a result, hospital treatment needed.
