Curriculum organisation

In the Primary Department (N.C. yrs R-6, Classes 1-4) the curriculum is delivered largely by the class team through a topic-based approach in a format very similar to mainstream practice. All staff work very closely together to share ideas and materials in order to ensure progression and continuity for all pupils.

In the Secondary Department (N.C. yrs 7-11, Classes 5-12) the curriculum is delivered largely through a subject-based approach as in mainstream secondary schools. Again, staff work very closely together to plan, assess and evaluate the ongoing review of curriculum issues.

At the end of each key stage (key stages 1-3) pupils undertake Standard Assessment Tasks (SATs).

At the end of key stage 4, all pupils have the opportunity to gain nationally accredited certification of their achievements through the Welsh Joint Exam Council (WJEC) Certificate of Educational Achievement. This is currently offered in eight curriculum areas. Pupils also have the opportunity to attempt the National Trident Gold Award and the ASDAN Challenge Award. K.S. 4. Pupils also have the opportunity to take GCSEs in English, Maths and Art – the first cohort started in September 2002.

Arrangements for consideration
of curriculum complaints

All parents naturally have concerns from time to time about the progress or welfare of their children. We consider it an important part of our job to deal with such concerns as soon as they arise and to discuss fully with you ways of handling them. The majority can be settled, at school level, if you approach your child’s teacher in the first instance. But sometimes the problem needs the help of other professionals such as the Education Welfare or Psychology and Assessment Services. We can advise you about the appropriate agency to contact, should this be necessary. In certain circumstances you have the right of appeal (eg in connection with admissions/special educational needs) – again we will inform you of those rights, or put you in touch with someone who will discuss them with you. The LEA has a statutory procedure for handling curriculum complaints and other related matters. A copy of the LEA’s Policy is available from the school office on request.
