Aims: A basis for our work
Whitby Heath School is a caring community and we share the values that underlie this belief, especially with our children. Each of us, teaching staff, governors, support staff, children, parents and others in the School and connected with it strive to discover the needs of others, and find means to meet these needs.
We are committed to the pursuit of excellence and strive to develop the unique good in each individual so that everyone feels that they are a contributing part of the School community and not simply an element upon which the School acts.
Home and School are the central elements in the life of the child and it is essential that they work together if the goal of excellence is to be achieved. A mutual and sympathetic understanding of the aspirations, strengths and limitations of both parties will best achieve this. Effective communication between School and home will ensure a realistic shared understanding of each child’s potential and a proactive attitude to the challenging personal targets that will be set.
We offer a welcoming and responsive approach to parents and carers and we encourage them to participate in the daily life of the School, through parent – teacher discussions and an active ‘Friends of the School’ association. We actively develop the attitude, in staff, parents and children, that it is perfectly natural for parents to be present in School.
We aim to prepare every child for the future by developing the skills and knowledge to maximise potential. Curriculum provision is carefully differentiated to develop to the full the abilities of those children endowed with above average academic ability and to provide relevant support to those children whose development will benefit.
However, children have not only a future but also a present that they have the absolute right to enjoy to the full. It is our aim to make a very positive contribution to this entitlement and encourage the children to develop to the full in social, academic, creative, physical and personal terms.
We aim deliberately for a relaxed, informal atmosphere and describe our approach to education as child centred but the traditional courtesies between child and teacher and respect for the traditional authority of the teacher are still expected. This respect for courtesy and authority is fundamental to developing motivation, attitudes, good work habits and a sense of order. Individuality is actively encouraged but the children understand that all expressions of individuality must be carefully balanced against the well being of all members of our community. In this way the children are prepared for dealing with other individuals and society at large.
The physical environment of the School is a very important factor in achieving our aims. A stimulating, attractive and well-organised environment will help to motivate the children to give of their best. We continue to re-develop the environment to achieve maximum benefit.
