Behaviour and discipline policy.

This policy was drawn up in the summer Term of 1998 following consultation with the teaching staff, kitchen staff, mid-day supervisors, parents and Governors. The policy encompasses all areas of the school, a comprehensive list of Rule Making Areas can be obtained from the school. The Governors adopted the document in November 1998 and it was reviewed in 2004.

All members of the school staff will contribute to ensuring good behaviour during teaching, play and during mid-day dining periods. Recording of unacceptable behaviour will be continuous and in all areas of the school. A Good Book and Red Index Transgression Box will be provided for this purpose. Parents will be informed should their children transgress and break school rules (having been warned on prior occasions) i.e. a 'white card'.  If the school considers further support is required to improve behaviour, a 'yellow  card'  will be issued and parents will be consulted on the next step. The County's Behaviour Support Team will be contacted and following parental consultation a plan of action will be implemented. Should it be necessary to issue a 'red card', pupils will be excluded following agreed procedures and consultation with parents, the LEA and Governors. There was one pupil exclusion for one day during the past twelve months

Positive - good behaviour will be emphasised wherever appropriate. Golden Time rewards pupils' good behaviour. Pupil monitors from all classes have opportunities to dispense and care for sports equipment loaned to pupils during play periods. Wet play games plus a games trolley for play periods are running successfully. Litter monitors tidy the school grounds and door monitors look after school entrances. 70% of junior pupils assist the school as pupil monitors and receive a variety of rewards including a 'Privilege Card'.

In order to encourage and reward good behaviour a House Points System will apply and pupils will be awarded house points as rewards. The Good Book is linked to the House Point system. In the Friday whole school assembly, the successful totals will be announced and the pupils of the successful house praised (Marian, Glyndwr and Llys). In July, the members of the winning house will be awarded a certificate and the captains presented with a shield, the 'Councillor Trevor Jones Memorial Shield'

Eco Schools Initiative

Pupils and staff are involved in a number of initiatives including recycling paper, ink cartridges, plastic and mobile telephones as well as reducing costs within the school, of water, electricity and heating. A paper bank is located in the school car park.

We were awarded the Blue Flag in September 2006 in recognition of our achievement in working towards a sustainable lifestyle.

Out of school clubs have included Yr Urdd, Boys and Girls Football Training, Netball, Rounders, Recorders, Morris Dancing, Art and Craft, Rugby, Hockey, Athletics, Golf,  Short Tennis, Gymnastics, Cricket, Crown Green Bowling; Years 6, 5 and 4 have Cycling Proficiency whilst pupils in Years 1 and 2 learn Kerbcraft. Clubs meet either at lunchtime or after school. Infant pupils in year 2 are able to participate in gymnastics and short tennis clubs. Pupils have achieved great success in the Eryri Gymnastics competitions for vaulting and tumbling in 2005 and 2006.

Pupils regularly participate in competitive games with neighbouring primary schools. The under 9s short tennis team were Welsh Champions in 1998 and runners up in 1999. In 1998 this achievement was recognised by Conwy County Borough when the school was presented with the County Borough Sports Award Junior Team Trophy. The school hockey team were the Colwyn Bay league champions in 2004. Year 5 pupils participated in the Conwy 2005 and 2006 Festival of Dance - Welsh Country Dancing, in Llandudno

Ysgol Cynfran was selected as the best primary school in 1999 for 'Promoting Physical Education and Healthy Living', and was awarded the Conwy County Borough Sports Award for Primary and Special Schools. The National Playing Fields Association, in recognition of the all round achievements in providing quality PE, sport and recreation opportunities for pupils, awarded a Certificate of Achievement to the school in June 2001. Ysgol Cynfran was accorded the status of Sports Marc Cymru NPFA 2001 - the first school in Conwy to attain this national sports award

Ysgol Cynfran is a partner school in the Conwy Physical Education and School Sports (PESS) Centre of sporting excellence. 

The school received the Primary/Special School Award in 2002, as a consequence of its hard work in developing sports and healthy living initiatives including cycling to school, kerb craft sessions, a walking bus and regular walking to school events

Violin and Brass Tutors attend school once a week, also a voice peripatetic teacher for Years 3/4 and 5/6, the school choir performs regularly at retirement homes during Easter and Christmas festivities

In addition the school enjoys participating in Festivals and Exhibitions and for our older children a residential visit to Glan Llyn, Bala and Nant B.H. outdoor centre in Llanrwst.
