Welcome

We are a unique, popular and friendly school where every individual can and does succeed.

We are proud that our school is a centre of excellence where high expectations lead to the highest standards of achievement and behaviour.

Our students develop confidence and a sense of self-worth. They are encouraged to grow as individuals, fostering self-discipline, respect for others and an understanding the importance of their role in our community and the world around them.

Academic standards are high, extra curricular activities are extensive and discipline is good.

Our school’s motto, “Success through Effort” and our aim “to provide a first-class education for our children in a secure, calm, enjoyable and stimulating

atmosphere” are translated into action through the hard work, commitment and expertise of our staff and the happy, positive ethos at our school.

The school is unique in providing first class education and national and international experiences for all students. At the heart of our international community, Ysgol Dinas Brân inspires all to become worldwide ambassadors and champions for the underprivileged. All students develop citizenship; linking with our partner schools in Spain, Germany, Hungary, France, Italy, Japan and Nepal in our endeavours to become a totally eco-friendly, healthy school.

We hope our prospectus gives you an insight to our school. You are very welcome to telephone for an appointment to visit during the school day.

Aims

Our aim is to provide a first class education for our children in a secure, calm, enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere.

We work in partnership with parents, the community and our partner schools to help students become:-

  • Self-motivated and confident
  • Prepared for all aspects of life
  • Independent learners

and have

  • Self-respect and respect for others
  • Values and high expectations

We endeavour to ensure our children

  • Enjoy learning in the broadest sense
  • Are able to work independently
  • Have clear targets and are given strategies to achieve them
  • Make new friends and are able to work with different people
  • Have a breadth of opportunity
  • Are well thought of in the community
  • Feel valued and are proud of our School community
We will achieve this by: -
  • Valuing each student as a unique individual
  • Stretching and supporting all to achieve their potential
  • Having high expectations of students and staff; celebrating their achievements
  • Providing a purposeful, safe and stimulating environment
  • Keeping abreast of new developments and encouraging innovation
  • Providing the broadest range of opportunities, both in and out of the classroom
  • Recognising that all have a role and responsibility within our School’s community
  • Expecting mutual respect and tolerance
  • Taking effective action should a member of our School spoil our community for others

Our Curriculum

At Ysgol Dinas Brân students follow a curriculum that gives a solid grounding for the future and a broad educational experience that is second to none. We provide a wide range of opportunities for all pupils and encourage them to become “life long learners”.

Many lessons are taught in mixed-ability form groups but some setting has been introduced in years 7 and 8 and 9 to ensure students work at the appropriate pace and level.

In Years 10 and 11 (Key Stage 4) there are many opportunity for choice, based on student's strengths and interests. All option subjects are currently taught to GCSE level and all are available to all students. Some vocational packages are available, including DIDA, vocational pathways and vocational GCSEs.

ICT is used as a tool to support all learning. Through the programme covered, students are taught to be critical and largely autonomous users of ICT. Specialist packages are used to support the learning in all departments. Students are able to follow ICT to GCSE, A level and also achieve the ECDL qualification.

The Sixth Form choices are varied, offering scope for our students to specialize in many fields. The Learning Centre is being developed with first class facilities, resources and latest digital technology equipment. Links with other schools, colleges and universities are very strong.

Careers guidance is available for all, so learning pathways can be properly considered and futures planned with care. Careers lessons take place from year 9 and work experience is arranged in year 10 and in the sixth form.

The school is fully bilingual with a Welsh stream from years 7-11. One class in each year is taught all subject areas through the medium of welsh. We aim to extend this to the sixth form.

All students follow a course of study in Welsh for five years as required by National Curriculum regulations. In Years 10 and 11, all students study for the Short Course GCSE and have the opportunity to do a full GCSE.
