Merrill College

We are a Secondary School with a thriving Sixth Form. We are an inclusive school and welcome applications from all sectors of the community.

Merrill is a caring community where staff and students work together to enable each person to do their best.  We provide quality teaching and learning experiences which will ensure that our students are able to recognise opportunities, make the most of their skills, and have the confidence to aim even higher!

At Merrill we aim:

  • To give all students every opportunity to learn and to develop to the best of their abilities.
  • To create a broad and balanced programme of education through our wide range of curricular and extra curricular activities.
  • To instil in the students an understanding that education is a life-long process.
  • To make students aware of the wider community by strengthening our links with industry.

We have five key words which outline the standards expected from Merrill College students at all times:

SIXTH FORM

In the Sixth Form students have individual access to common room facilities. Each student upon entering the Sixth Form is allocated a personal tutor.  This tutor will remain with them throughout the whole of the student's Sixth Form career.  The tutor is responsible for the oversight of the students and is the first point of contact for the students in College.  The Sixth Form is open from 08:30 to 16:30 each day of the week so as to enable students to make use of our facilities.  All students are expected to be in College from 08:45 to 15:15 each day.  Attendance is monitored through registers in each lesson and by the personal tutor.

Sixth Form students can choose combinations from a full range of subjects at GCE A and AS Level. Other subjects are also available depending upon demand. Vocational courses at Intermediate and Advanced Level are available

The step from Year 11 to Post-16 is a large one. From studying a large cross section of subjects for GCSE, you will be doing only a few subjects that really interest you. Therefore the quality of teaching and past***** support for our Merrill Sixth Formers has to be good. After all, you have a choice and Merrill College is just one of those choices.

As we increase our links with
Noel Baker School and Derby College, we want to be able to offer the best choice of subjects that suit all our students.

We are very proud of the Sixth Form setup here at Merrill. Students currently in the Sixth Form feel they are well known by their teachers and therefore well supported.

Life in Merrill Sixth Form is not just about study.  There are many opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of activities.  These include:

  •  Duke of Edinburgh award scheme
  • Sixth Form Council
  • Social events
  • The Children's University
  • Mentoring Schemes

All students have their progress monitored on a regular basis.  There are two reports issued in Year 12 together with two Parental Consultation evenings.  In Year 13 there is a final report issued and a final consultation evening.

Year 13 students receive a large amount of help and guidance about careers and university applications through the UCAS system.  Our team of personal tutors are very experienced in dealing with UCAS and careers advice generally.

Sixth Form here at Merrill College is definitely worth investigating. We look forward to meeting you soon.
