Welcome to St Giles C.E. Aided Primary School, Matlock

A warm welcome to St Giles C E Aided Primary School. WE ARE CURRENTLY WITHIN THE TOP 50 SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY 2006 and in the TOP FIVE IN DERBYSHIRE.

Built in 1991 and opened in May 1992 by HRH Queen Elizabeth, this modern building, which has been recently extended, provides an attractive, stimulating environment for your child. This, enhanced by a quality, broad and balanced curriculum for the whole child, within a stable and happy setting will give you and your child peace of mind and a desire to achieve to full potential. We are current holders of Basic Skills Award, Gold Artsmark, HPS Active Mark and Out of Schools Learning opportunities Schools Extra Award.

We are proud of our Church Aided status which resources us from the Diocese and LEA. We aim to encourage the best of Christian response to truth and life at it's fullest;and the opportunity for the children to explore, experience and secure an understanding of the Christian faith for themselves.

Our site is located on the edge of the Peak District and the town of Matlock. As a small school (110 approx) we maintain close knowledge of the children and smaller classes than average.

Facilities are modern and able to cater for disabled access throughout.

The site nestles under Riber Castle hillside, with beautiful planted grounds and a secure building in the village of Starkholmes, within walking distance of the town resources.
There are four main teaching areas within the building, office, a modern well equipped hall, courtyard, library and sports facilities outside. Parking is available at the front of the building.

Next door we have the Lower School site of Highfields Secondary School which becomes very familiar to our children before they are due to leave us for their next phase.
If you choose to visit us in person the chidlren will be happy to talk to you and give you and hopefully our child/ren a tour of the premises.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum at St. Giles is both broad and balanced. We aim to be inclusive of all abilities and offer support for any special needs including gifted children. The range of subjects offered is also supported by daily clubs which are mostly arts or sports based but not exclusively so. Music instrument tuition is available.

We currently have specialist technical help for ICT and each child has access to the computer network weekly to develop skills and support subject knowledge.

Targets are set for Numeracy and Literacy for all children inclusive of Foundation Stage children once they have settled into routine. Parent evenings are offered each term but with an appointment each teacher will be able to discuss your child more fully throughout the year.

Further details including poilicies available from the school.
Children are taught in ability groups and work is planned to differentiate accordingly. The topics taught for History and Geography in particular are taught on a two year cycle because of the mixed aged classes.

Each morning Literacy and Numeracy are taught with arts subjects and Science taught mainly in the afternoons. However, Excellence and Enjoyment sees a full intergration of subjects across most areas and very full inclusion as expressed in our Every Child Matters agenda.

R.E is mainly Christian based with other faiths taught too.
A Junior Choir performs regularly in the area, at Sheffield Arena and at special seasonal times. Every junior child joins the choir which is extremely well attended.

Extra support for children and training for adults is offered in ROWA initiatives, Booster Classes, ALS, FLS, Springboard and ELS. We also aim to enhance curriculum opportunities for Gifted children.

Many parents and voluntary helpers support the school on a daily basis in lessons and at clubs. Some of these are run for seasonal sessions.

Clubs offered include:

Art
Sewing
Guitar
Football / Netball
British Sign Language
Wildwatch
Recorders

Daily After School Club activities until 5.30pm
Pre-School weekly session Wednesday afternoons for rising 4's.
The school staff also provide educational opportunities for parents in parenting skills, supporting children at home and will be able to give advice on accessing any agencies you may need to support you or simply for information.
School policies for curriculum and aspect issues are available in school when you visit us.

ADMISSIONS

The Admissions Policy will be laid out in the School Brochure which can be sent to you at any time. Like all schools now, we try to be inclusive of all and will take people from out of our immediate catchment area if they desire a Church School's education for a particular reason. You will discover the form for admission at the back of the brochure along with a Home School agreement to be completed.
