About Cullompton Community College

Cullompton Community College is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school situated in the beautiful countryside of Devon within 5 minutes of junction 28 of the M5 motorway. The moors and the coast are equally accessible and we are 25 minutes from the city of Exeter. I joined the college in September 2002 and have appointed a new management team; we have worked hard to improve the college and look forward to continuous improvement in facilities and exam results over the next few years. In December 2003 we secured sponsorship of £50,000 from The Co-operative Group to enable us to submit a bid to the DFES to become a Business and Enterprise college. Our college is a community with adults and students working together and taking equal responsibility. A happy well ordered disciplined environment is essential if students are to learn effectively. We believe that coming to college should be enjoyable and we actively encourage our young people to tell us if something is wrong, if they are not happy or there is something inhibiting their learning. College organisation is designed to ensure each young person feels safe, secure and happy. We place high importance on respect, honesty and courtesy.

We believe that learning should be fun but students should be challenged to achieve their potential. The curriculum is reviewed annually to ensure it is appropriate for our young people. The teaching staff are proud of the inspirational and motivational teaching and the positive learning environment that pervades our college.

AIMS

The aims of Cullompton Community College are to enable each student:

  • To achieve their full potential through the acquisition of attitudes, skills and knowledge
  • To foster individual self esteem and respect for others
  • To prepare themselves for taking their place in the wider community by living and working in the college community, in which all are equally valued and all equally share.

FACILITIES

We consider ourselves to be exceptionally fortunate as we have had new building developments providing excellent facilities within the college. The technology suite was opened in 1998 and provides well equipped modern rooms for technology. Our science block was opened in 2003 and has been built to a modern high specification. We have shared community use of the sports facilities including a large well equipped sports hall, an Astroturf and a multi-gym. Our ICT facilities are superb, we have a purpose built music suite, library and independent learning centre. We have a small outdoor swimming pool which provides extra-curricular opportunities for swimming and scuba diving. The college buildings are modern and much of the college has been refurbished in recent years providing a very pleasant environment.

CURRICULUM

We meet all statutory requirements and ensure our core subjects, English, Mathematics and Science are allocated sufficient time to enable students to cover the statutory frameworks for these subjects and do well in their KS3 SATs and GCSEs. ICT is an important aspect of our curriculum offer to ensure our young people are equipped with appropriate skills for working and living in the 21C. Every student will have an ICT lesson and for every subject our staff have been trained to incorporate ICT within their teaching and use ICT as a tool for student learning. Our languages department is very successful. From September 2003 the majority of our students will study two languages to provide a secure foundation for those who wish to continue with languages to KS4 and post 16. The department arrange very successful exchanges with France and Germany each year. At KS3 all students study technology, PE, the arts and the humanities. Citizenship is a new course for 2003 and incorporates personal and social education, sex education, drugs education and careers education. Our Citizenship course is designed to be specifically appropriate for the students at Cullompton Community College.

BEYOND THE CURRICULUM

We have a number of unique and exciting opportunities for our young people. We have a technology club that has built a go-cart and a hovercraft. Students enjoy the engineering, design and development aspects of this club as well as the more practical on-road and on-water experiences. Our sports department is very successful; we are a relatively small college but seem to win many of the competitions! Opportunities are available every day for students to participate in sport and we actively encourage them to do so as part of developing a healthy life style. We have recently been able to provide opportunities for dance and have a thriving dance club for each year group. We participate in the Ten Tors Challenge and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Our computer club is very popular and there are many other opportunities on offer.
