Welcome to Oaklands Park School

Oaklands Park is a very special school: we offer education and care to children and young people who have a range of special needs. Our pupils and students come from all over the county of Devon.

We work very closely with parents to provide the best education for our children. Our work has been recognised officially by Ofsted and by Ofsted Social Care.

We are the proud possessors of the Sports Active Mark and Investors in People Award. We hope soon, to add the Healthy School Award to our trophies! Oaklands Park aspires to be a happy school where children can enjoy learning. If we can be of help, we look forward to hearing from you!

SCHOOL AIMS

At Oaklands Park we:

  • Value the voice of every member of the school community
  • Value all members of the school community
  • Value the individual’s right to an appropriate education and provide structured opportunities for interaction
  • Foster a positive approach to learning
  • Promote and celebrate individual and combined achievement
  • Strive for the fulfilment of every member of the school community

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Staff at the school, with the support of therapists, employ a variety of means to ensure that children are given opportunities to learn and communicate. Amongst the methods used are PECS, TEACCH, Total Communication Strategies.

The school employs a behaviour management strategy called Team Teach. Information about these methods and techniques is shared with parents by means of formal Annual Reviews and informal gatherings, such as Coffee Mornings, etc. Governors and the Leadership Team are aware of the need to have a motivated, well-qualified staff team, and to this end have invested heavily in continuing professional development.

Many staff have completed or are working through NVQ programmes, and a range of other qualifications. The school strives to be family friendly. Parents are represented on the governing body and play an active role in drawing up and reviewing children’s individual education and care programmes.

CURRICULUM

We aim to offer a curriculum which provides pupils with opportunities to learn about themselves and others, about the world in which they live and the role which they can play in the wider community.

We ensure that the school provides a broad and balanced curriculum, with a great deal of emphasis placed on lifeskills, social skills, appropriate communication etc. Teaching programmes are designed to address those needs highlighted in the child's Statement, with targets clearly laid out in the child's Individual Education Programme.

CLASSES

All classes and residential areas at the school are named after trees adding to the woodland ambience!
