WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

The school was built in 1974 as an infant's school. It had just 9 children on roll. Intially the school catered for children aged 5-7 years. Some of the children then transferred to the nearest Catholic school which was Sacred Heart in Paignton. Other children transferred to Eden Park Junior School in Brixham.

We are a voluntary aided school, which means that we are only partly funded by the Catholic Diocese in which we are located (Plymouth). Most of our money comes from the Department for Employment and Education and the Local Authority. Approximately half our children are practising Catholics, and half are from other Christian denominations.

AIMS

At all times we aim to:

  • Help children to learn concern and respect for others, good manners, courtesy, self-discipline and a caring attitude towards others.
  • Encourage each child to develop his/her talents through music, drama, art, craft and physical activities.
  • Develop self-respect and confidence.
  • Help children to communicate effectively in speech and writing, and to encourage a love of books and reading.
  • Ensure each child is given an understanding of mathematical skills, and opportunities to apply these in relevant situations.
  • Make children aware of the world around them through projects and related studies.
  • Stimulate children's curiosity through scientific studies involving observation, experimentation and recording.
  • Encourage children to ask questions and think for themselves.
  • Show children the value of working together, sharing and caring.
  • Encourage each child's full potential. Strive for academic excellence with each child working at his/her own level.

CURRICULUM

The National Curriculum specifies what children must study and what they are expected to know at different ages. This ties in with the national tests (the Standard Assessment Tests or SATS) which will check if your child is meeting these targets. The 'core' subjects of the National Curriculum are English, Mathematics, Science,ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and RE. In addition to the core curriculum, the other primary school subjects (foundation subjects) make up a broad and balanced curriculum. The National Curriculum identifies 'key stages' at which testing takes place. Key Stage 1 occurs at the end of the 'infant' school when most children are seven, while Key Stage 2 occurs at the end of the 'junior' school when most children are eleven.
