Stuart Road is a community school. We are proud of our long history since the school was founded in 1893.

Rooms are generously proportioned within our building, and, although our outdoor space is small, we have a garden and climbing frame in separate playground areas. We regularly use our local park for games – only 5 minutes walk away, and maintain strong links with our neighbouring Secondary schools – having access to many of their facilities. Stuart Road Out of School Club runs from within our building and offers child care provision through a breakfast, after school and holiday club.

We firmly believe in a co-operative approach to support the learning of our children – valuing the important role you, as parents and carers, have to play in making your child’s education as successful as possible. We look forward to working with you in partnership.

The Governing Body believes that the school curriculum should help all pupils:

• to develop lively, enquiring minds, together with a willingness to ask questions and to argue rationally;
• to think and to act creatively and with imagination;
• to gain knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to a fast changing world, so they may be self reliant and adaptable;
• to acquire, in particular, the enabling skills of literacy and numeracy;
• to develop an understanding of the past which will help them live successfully in the present, and to plan intelligently for the future;
• to grow in confidence and independence, and to experience the value of cooperation;
• to understand the feelings of others, to respect their values and to consider thoughtfully their own attitudes, values and beliefs;
• to achieve their true potential, and to take pride in that achievement, while taking pleasure in the achievement of others.
• to involve the support of their parents/carers, through the Home/School Agreement.
• to prepare the children to live in a multi-ethnic society.

The National Curriculum is an important element of the school curriculum. Through constant review we aim to deliver a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum, stimulating the children’s interests and fostering enthusiasms whilst ensuring continuity and progression. It comprises all learning and other experiences that we plan for our pupils. Subjects may be ‘blocked’ or linked together, rather than being taught separately and in isolation. A variety of teaching approaches ensure interest is maintained.

Stuart Road has established a reputation for high standards in the quality of the teaching and the academic and creative achievements of the children. Care is taken to stimulate the able and to support children with specific learning difficulties. Our curriculum is designed to encourage children to reach their maximum potential, and we make every effort to ensure that each child meets with a measure of success and self worth.

The school has a policy of monitoring assessment results to identify more able pupils. Additional provision is made for a group at KS1 and KS2 to work on a wide range of activities to extend their learning and skills linked with LEA initiatives. These have included Writing and Mathematics opportunities, Drama workshops and links with local secondary schools and the University. Where applicable we try to develop particular strengths and skills by suggesting to parents out-of-school clubs which cater for such pupils. We also encourage Year 5 and Year 6 children to organise and run their own clubs during lunch time and fundraise for charities.

‘Enrichment’ activities have proved very popular with the children. These are ‘blocked’ hours of activities during the school day (one hour a week). Staff and volunteers have offered all children opportunities to engage in a range of activities: art and crafts – seasonal and other interest-based activities including calligraphy; sports – athletics, dance, gymnastics; modern foreign languages – French and Spanish; Salsa dancing; food technology – seasonal; Music – including DJ work; First Aid; Chess and board games… the list is endless!
