WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

Tavistock College is one of the largest schools in the country with a student population in excess of 1,861 with 382 in the Sixth Form. Oversubscribed and in the vanguard of curriculum development, the College has earned an outstanding reputation for academic excellence and pastoral support. In September 1996, we were granted Language College status under the Specialist Schools Initiative.

The College is organised by Departments who assume responsibility for the academic management of specific curriculum areas.

The College is at the heart of an extended community and the work of the Community Education Department has been instrumental in generating new initiatives to meet local needs. The Community Educational Team have provided a comprehensive programme that ranges from basic literacy to Access to Higher Education courses and from the provision of crèche facilities to open access IT facilities supported by European Funding.

SPORTS CENTRE

We aim to provide Tavistock and the wider community a variety of sporting activities within a clean, safe and motivating environment. Tavistock College Sports Centre at present offers 22 different sports activities throughout the week, ranging from freestyle dance to archery.

Exciting new plans are being finalised to provide a first class multi sports environment for the people of South West Devon. This is a partnership development that aims to promote an active lifestyle, increase participation in sport and physical activity and improve access to facilities. A hub site will be based at Tavistock College for clubs and other groups across the region.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

The College offers a wide variety of after school clubs, including a range of sports clubs, as well as sailing and climbing. Students can perform in the College orchestra or choir and learn to play African rhythm on the drums. Many students have enjoyed taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and we regularly send teams on the Ten Tors Challenge. The College also runs a supervised homework/coursework session called 'Headstart' which runs after school on two days per week.

SIXTH FORM

We have over 350 students in the Sixth Form following a wide range of programmes. Our Year 12 students can select a one-year BTEC First Diploma course, or, for those with five or more higher GCSE grades, choose from over 30 AS-level and A-level courses that we offer. Some of these are advanced applied courses including Leisure, Business and a full-time National Diploma in Children’s Learning and Development. Students in Year 11 are guided in their choice from this wide range of subjects and we work closely with the careers service throughout Key Stage 4 and at post-16.

Students aiming for A-levels now choose four AS-level subjects in Year 12, and take three of these through to full A-level accreditation at the end of Year 13. A number of universities now look favourably on one of the four AS-level subjects being from a contrasting discipline to the other three. In this prospectus you will see some examples of student programmes. The main consideration is to choose a combination of courses that suits you, the student, and reflects your strengths and career options.
