WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

WHY IS TOPSHAM SPECIAL?

  • Because the children always come first
  • Because we promote a spirit of openness and welcoming within the school for children, parents and staff
  • Because we have a strong ethos of mutual respect that exists between pupils, staff, and governors within the school
  • Because we develop links with parents, the extended family and wider community who we see as invaluable educational resources for each child
  • Because we encourage innovation among our staff, promoting an environment that stimulates creativity and lateral thinking

AIMS

The central aim of our school is to offer a friendly, positive, safe, caring and stimulating environment through trust and partnership between staff, pupils, parents, governors and links with the Topsham Community.

We offer a committed and talented team of staff who are focussed on delivering a creative curriculum through high quality teaching, which is rich and diverse for all children in our care. We are proud of the achievements of our children and identify success in academic, social, cultural, physical and spiritual learning as they extend their knowledge, skills and dispositions to learn.

CURRICULUM

Along with schools across the country we teach in accordance with the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum requirements, including regular numeracy and literacy sessions. Obviously there is a strong emphasis on the core subjects, including information communication technology but not to the exclusion of what we would term ‘a broad and balanced curriculum’. The extent of our ‘broad and balanced curriculum’ can be seen in the following pages, though it is often difficult to separate learning into subject areas. Much of our non core subjects are topic based and within each theme the familiar subject areas are incorporated through agreed yearly, termly and weekly planning structures that provide smooth continuity and progression as children move from year to year. In their class your child will learn individually, in small groups or as part of a class depending on the work and needs of the individual child and what teaching style is appropriate for a particular lesson.
