WELCOME!!!

The West of England School and College is the leading regional centre for the education and care of children and young people with little or no sight in the South West of England.

We cater for all levels of sight loss and complex needs. Our aim is to challenge each learner to be as active and independent as possible, whatever their ability. Our friendly and supportive atmosphere encourages them to thrive and achieve.

Each learner has a personalised curriculum with their own learning goals. Our professional staff includes a wide range of specialists, who offer all the expertise and encouragement the learners need on their educational journey.

At West of England visually impaired children and young people are supported and challenged to develop independence and success academically and socially.

TEACHING AND LEARNING UP TO 16

At the West of England School, we specialise in meeting the needs of young people with sight loss, including many with additional complex needs. We aim to give them the best possible education. In addition to academic excellence, we offer each child a personalised challenging curriculum, broadening their experiences and developing life skills and independence.

Our teaching, care, therapy, mobility and nursing staff are fully involved in providing a holistic, extended curriculum.

TEACHING AND LEARNING UP POST 16

The West of England College is the further education department of the West of England School. We work in partnership with other Colleges of further education in Devon to provide a wide range of academic and vocational courses both on and off site.

We provide a wide range of specialist training and support to help young people with a visual impairment make a successful transition to adult life.

MOBILITY

Interacting, travelling and moving through different environments safely can be a daunting and challenging prospect for an individual with a visual impairment. Our mobility department uses individual programmes and tuition to empower learners with the skill, attitude and knowledge for safe, appropriate independent travel.

THERAPY AND MEDICAL SUPPORT

At the West of England School and College we take an integrated approach to the needs of all our learners. Each one's medical and therapeutic needs are identified as part of their individual learning plan. Therapy and other needs are met as an integral part of the 24 hour curriculum.

ASSESSMENT

We offer a free assessment service to visually impaired young people and their families in the South West. Local authorities, medical consultants or parents can make a referral.

The assessment aims to offer advice on:

  • The effect that vision has on development
  • Implications of the visual impairment on living and learning
  • The types and levels of specialist support
  • Strategies and programmes to encourage further progress
