WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

This 9-13 community middle school, serving the full ability range opened in September 1973. Its catchment area covers Wimborne and various local schools, including our recognised feeder schools of Merley and the surrounding villages.

At 13+, the children transfer to Queen Elizabeth’s School at Pamphill, Wimborne, or to Corfe Hills School in Corfe Mullen, depending upon the area in which they live. There is regular and effective liaison between the various schools in the two pyramids which ensures that the children’s education develops smoothly and properly from the time they enter school until they leave.

The school moved into its present building in March 2003. The new building contains up-to-date specialist accommodation for Music, Art, Science, ICT and the three Technology areas of Food, Textiles and Resistant Materials and a sports hall. The area around the school was also redeveloped. There is a play area which is also used for netball and tennis and a field used for soccer, rugby, athletics, cricket, volleyball and rounders, with adequate changing and shower facilities. Also in the grounds are a large garden area and a greenhouse which are both used by the children.

AIMS

  • To build systematically on the pupils’ existing knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes.
  • To be a vital link between the small, secure environment of a first school and the diversified, more specialist life in the upper school.
  • To help pupils develop lively, imaginative, enquiring minds, encouraging creativity, curiosity and a lifelong desire to learn.
  • To help pupils develop the ability to question and argue rationally and to apply themselves to tasks.
  • To help pupils acquire knowledge, experience, understanding and skills relevant to adult life and employment in a fast changing world.
  • To develop the full personality and potential of each pupil – intellectual, physical, spiritual, moral, social and aesthetic.
  • To set and encourage pupils to aim for, high standards in all they do, and to increase their confidence and enlarge their capacity for enjoyment.
  • To help pupils develop personal qualities such as self-discipline, self-confidence, reliability, personal organisation and independence.
  • To help pupils to learn how to face problems and how to set about solving them.
  • To help pupils develop personal moral values, respect for religious values, and understanding of other races, religions and ways of life.
  • To maintain and develop the school as an integral part of the local community.
  • To foster a sense of pride in the School and its environs, and a caring courteous community.
  • To help pupils develop a responsible understanding of the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations.
  • To help pupils appreciate human achievements and aspirations.
  • To create an environment in which all the above can be achieved.

CURRICULUM

The governing body is responsible for the overall curriculum of the school, which incorporates the National Curriculum as required by the Education Reform Act 1988.

The National Curriculum specifies three core subjects (English, Mathematics and Science), seven foundation subjects (History, Geography, Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education and a modern foreign language from Year 7 onwards) and Religious Education. The governors have also accepted the Dorset Education Authority’s revised Curriculum Policy Statement as part of the school curriculum.

Teachers from the different phases of education meet regularly to plan the courses of work that cover Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum (for children aged 7 – 11) and Key Stage 3 (for children aged 11 – 14). These courses are designed to cater for all children’s needs, aptitudes and abilities and to this end we seek to provide opportunities for many specialist activities beyond the basic demands of the curriculum.

The school is organised so that the pupils in years 5 – 8 have access to specialised teaching and facilities to help prepare them for work in the upper school at 13+. Pupils are set in English and Mathematics through their four years at the school and in Science, ICT, French and Humanities in Year 8. Setting helps the teachers both challenge and support the pupils, as necessary.
