At Hayeswood, parents/guardians, staff and governors work together to provide a stimulating and caring environment in which all children feel happy and can thrive.

We provide a broad and well balanced curriculum which aims to develop the full potential of all children and we are proud of the high standards achieved. Children are encouraged to develop enquiring minds and independence while learning to care and share.

We believe that the most effective way for this to happen is for parents and staff to work together in partnership. To this end all connected with our school are welcomed and encouraged to take an active part in our daily life.

We aim to:

• Provide stimulating activities that reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum, the Foundation Stage Curriculum and the Dorset RE syllabus, thus helping children to become both literate and numerate as well as developing other skills of communication.
• Foster a close relationship between home and school and encourage parents and carers to take an active part in their children’s education.
• Build strong links with the wider community and other schools within the pyramid.

Children are taught as individuals, groups or as a whole class, depending on the circumstances and the requirements of the task. Children work in groups of similar ability for some activities, whilst benefiting from working in mixed-ability groups on other occasions. As well as more formal learning, we consider play and practical activities to be an important part of our curriculum. Through these, children are expected to work together, as a group or class, to explore, observe and investigate.

We plan an exciting curriculum for the children organised into cross-curricular topics wherever possible. The details of our schemes of work are drawn from the National Curriculum, The National Literacy Strategy and the National Numeracy Strategy, and for our youngest children from the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation stage. Curriculum Base notes are sent each term to give parents an overview of what is going to be taught and ways they can help at home.
