ABOUT US

Southwell School is currently the only primary school on the Island of Portland, taking children from 4 - 11 years of age. At the age of 11 children usually transfer to the Royal Manor Secondary School or to either All Saints Church of England School or Budmouth Technology College in Weymouth. At present we have approximately 198 pupils on roll in 7 classes.

The School opened in 1979 on a pleasant open site with its own playing field, playground, car park and landscaped areas. The School itself is attractive with each set of classrooms having its own entrance, toilets and practical teaching areas for creative work. Every classroom is fully enclosed offering pupils ideal learning conditions.

We have a well - equipped gymnasium that is also used for assemblies and lunchtimes. There is also a Library and a spacious school centre. We are currently re-developing our school playground areas in conjunction with the pupils through the School Council and parents’ Friends Association.

AIMS

At Southwell School we actively encourage children to:

  • Develop self - confidence and awareness of oneself, others and the environment,
  • Be tolerant of others and respect difference,
  • Develop an enthusiasm for learning and self - motivation that will continue throughout their adult lives,
  • Be good ambassadors for their School in the community and contribute towards making their School a better place.

CURRICULUM

At Southwell School; we firmly believe in giving our children a firm foundation towards their future learning. We place great emphasis on literacy and numeracy skills in school. We teach all of the subjects of the National Curriculum, i.e. English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Music, P.E., Information Communication Technology, R.E., Art & Design Technology. We place an equal emphasis upon our children learning the skills of social behaviour involving care, courtesy and consideration for others. It is our intention to enable the children to be involved in their own learning and feel that they can all make a positive contribution to the school regardless of ability. We positively encourage our children to work and play with each other, e.g. Year 6 children working with Reception class to make books together.
