ABOUT US

Underhill School is for children from seven to 11 years of age who live in Fortuneswell and the surrounding areas. The school was built of Portland Stone in 1913 and a hall was added in 1966. In 1992 three new classrooms were added and the existing building was modernised.

FACILITIES

The school has up-to-date facilities for primary schooling which include:

  • six classrooms and practical areas for science and art;
  • a new computer room with 15 networked computers
  • a further 20 networked computers including two in each class;
  • filtered broadband internet access;
  • a reference library;
  • an extensive lending library;
  • a large hall and separate studio for music and drama;
  • a fully heated swimming pool.
Outside there are hard play areas, a netball court, a timber play trail and long-jump pit. The school also has an arrangement to use the grass playing fields at Tophill Junior School for one afternoon a week.

AIMS

"We aim to bring out the best in each child in a happy and hard-working school."

We aim to help each child to:

  • reach their potential in all subjects;
  • take pride in work well done;
  • work at improving weaker areas;
  • learning to live together;
We also aim to help each child to:
  • become more self-confident and independent;
  • be able to work as part of a team;
  • stand up for their self without hurting others;

CURRICULUM

The governors have adopted Dorset's Curriculum Policy. This is a broad framework covering most of the experiences that a child has in school. Part of this consists of Religious Education, together with the following National Curriculum subjects:

CORE: English, mathematics, science, information & communication technology (ICT)

FOUNDATION: art, design & technology, geography, history, music, physical education

Some of these subjects are taught together through topics and themes which are carefully planned to meet the needs of the child and to follow on from work done at Brackenbury, our feeder school.

ADMISSIONS

The agreed policy of the Portland schools supports the view, shared by many parents, that there are strong educational and social advantages in children attending a local school. Our feeder school is Brackenbury Infants and pupils transfer here at the beginning of the school year in which they reach their eighth birthday. Parents are asked to complete a school admission form showing how they can be contacted in case of an emergency or accident.
