Research

We undertake a full spectrum of research from basic through to application in order to serve society and inform our teaching.

We bring a range of multidisciplinary skills to bear in addressing a number of fields including:

  • aerospace
  • defence
  • engineering
  • environment
  • health
  • management
  • manufacturing
  • public sector service delivery
  • security
  • transport and logistics.

Within these areas of activity, we seek to be the university of choice for those seeking to sponsor industrially and commercially relevant research. We continually seek to:

  • focus upon excellence in research that is of strategic and practical importance
  • work with industry in areas where the University's expertise has clear and obvious relevance
  • develop our research base by increasing the proportion of research students
  • win support for fundamental research from the Research Councils and for co-operative research from the European Community
  • achieve a strong research quality profile in the Research Assessment Exercise or its successor
  • communicate all research results by appropriate means.

Research Opportunities

Conducting more than £15m worth of research for industry – the third highest in the UK – puts Cranfield University in a unique position. Our research is strategic and practical and can be found making a difference in organisations throughout the world – providing solutions to real-life challenges. As such, our research programmes are demanding and require dedication – it takes a special kind of person to complete a Cranfield research degree.

PhD

An extended programme of study, a PhD involves original research work either developing entirely new areas of study, or concerned with the application of novel and existing ideas in new ways and new fields of activity. A programme of support from your dedicated supervisor, together with research training programmes, will help you to achieve your PhD in the three year time period. Initial registration is for an MPhil, with re-registration for a PhD following a year of satisfactory progress.

‘Split’ programmes allow you to carry out part of your research away from the university, perhaps overseas, and are appropriate if you need to undertake extensive local fieldwork or want to research a problem of local relevance.

The PhD with Integrated Studies is a variant of the PhD which gives you the opportunity to combine your research studies with a programme of taught modules designed to broaden your subject knowledge and develop team working and research skills.

MPhil

Lasting two years, an MPhil involves a programme of research, design, development or management studies, which will include experimental or survey work, and is designed to collect a body of data that is subject to critical analysis.

MSc by Research

This one-year programme will allow you to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the principles of a subject and their application. It involves a review of literature, collection and analysis of data and presentation of the results in a thesis.
