Welcome to Kendrick School

Message From the Head

April 2007

Marsha Elms

Dear Parents,

An interesting new dimension to Kendrick this year is that the governors have agreed to ‘positively pursue’ a soft federation between Kendrick and Reading Girls’ School. This is an exciting and innovative initiative which will enable us to share and spread good practice between our two schools. It will also enable us to improve our sixth form facilities and eventually build a new sixth form block.

In 2005, we were inspected by HMI using the new Ofsted framework. As a result, I am delighted to report that we were judged to be 'outstanding'. The full report is here. Please do read it as we are really proud of every word.

The new Sports hall is now in regular use and the girls are really enjoying it. We do still have a little capacity in the evening, weekend and holidays. If you are interested in hiring the Sports hall please do not hesitate to contact the school on 0118 9015859. In July, Dame Kelly Holmes visited the School. She was very impressed with our Sports hall and our dining facilities.

The exam results at all levels SAT's GCSE's, AS and A2 were excellent again in 2006. The exam results at every level, (SATs, GCSEs, AS and A2) were the best we have ever had and have placed us at the top of all State Schools nationally. We are looking forward to another excellent year.

We are delighted that so many of you are checking our website and we will continue to update it as often as we can.

With very best wishes for the summer term,
Thank you for your continuing support.

Marsha Elms

Kendrick is proud of its superb academic standards and also of the opportunities it affords the girls to participate in an all-round education where their thirst for knowledge and love of learning is nurtured in a secure and caring atmosphere.

'This is a school of outstandingly high quality. Leadership is highly effective in helping pupils to aspire to excellence as scholars and as persons. Pupils and students attain the highest standards. The quality of teaching is very good. The school provides very good value for money'.

Entry Procedure

There are 93 places for entry to Year 7 in the September of every year. Application forms can be collected from the school on Open Day or on request from the school on receipt of a stamped, addressed envelope.
Applications for entry must be completed and return to the school. Entry is by examination consisting of verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests. These usually take place in late November at Kendrick School. Dates for this year are inside the prospectus.

Admission at all other ages:

Pupils applying for places in other year groups are required to take tests in English, Mathematics, Modern Languages (French or German), Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The marks from these tests are combined and applicants for available places ranked accordingly. In the highly unlikely event of a tie, preference would be given to the applicant with the highest mark in the modern languages oral.

Sixth Form entry:

We accept applications from girls in other schools for entry into our growing and successful Sixth Form. Each year we welcome a number of new students for post-16 students at AS/A level and work hard to support and integrate them into the school. No entrance exam is required; acceptance is based on GCSE exam results. A Sixth Form Prospectus and application form is available from the school's Admissions Secretary. We consider applications throughout the year although the best time to apply is before March of a student's Year 11. There is an opportunity for parents and pupils to visit the school and meet the Headteacher on one evening in the autumn term prior to the junior-secondary transfer.

    Young Enterprise

    Student Council

The school council meets every two weeks. Meetings take place from 8.15am during Friday registration in Room M.

The Aims and scope of the School Council are set out below:-

    Aims

    • To provide a forum for discussion of issues of general concern to pupils and staff.
    • To encourage pupils to develop a sense of ownership of the school.
    • To afford the pupils an opportunity to influence the future development of the school.

    Scope

    • To advise the Headteacher and other appropiate persons of issues of concern and interest to the pupils and to make recommendations for action.
    • To consider various aspects of school policy and to make recommendations for action.
    • To be responsible for the rules governing the running of the Council.

    Organisation

    • The Council will consist of two elected representatives from each form who will act as representatives for the whole year.
    • The Council will meet approximately once a fortnight.
    • The Council will be run in a formal way by a member of staff.
    • Minutes from the Council will go to the Senior Management Team for discussion.
    • Students will receive a reply to any points raised.

    School Council Reps

The school council is made up of two representatives from each form in Years 7-11. The council meets every two weeks on Friday mornings during registration. In fact, we aim to begin the meetings at 8.15am. The meetings are run by the Year 11 reps, until Easter when the Year 10s take over for the summer term. The Year 10 reps usually continue to represent their forms through Year 11 to have some experience and continuity within the team. A member of staff, usually Mrs Holden, but sometimes Dr Swale or a member of the SMT attends the meeting, mainly to raise issues from the staff and to give advice or answer questions. The girls take the minutes, which are circulated to forms and staff.

The role of a school council rep is to raise issues which are of concern to her form and to feed back the minutes of meetings to her form. She may also be asked for her opinion, or her form's opinion on issues raised by the staff. A good time for the reps to discuss issues with the rest of their form is on Wednesday mornings, when the staff are in their meeting. The reps should therefore be happy to speak out within a group and to talk to staff. They must be able to attend the meetings, which will begin early on Friday mornings. They should also be prepared to do the job for the whole year and, in the case of Year 10, possibly for longer.
