Welcome to Montem Primary School

I would like to take this opportunity of welcoming you to the Montem Primary School website and trust the information on the site will be of use to you.

Here at Montem we see the partnership between home and school as a major feature of your child’s education and we continually endeavour to improve the quality of the education we offer to your child.

Parents are very important to us and I hope that this website will give you a clearer insight into many of our expectations.

We are proud of our achievements at Montem Primary School and we want you to share this pride.

Mr. C. McGeachie
Headteacher

Montem Primary School

Montem Primary is a Community School for Boys and Girls between 4 and 11 years of age (school years Reception to 6).

We also have a Nursery class catering for children from 3 to 4 years.

There are excellent facilities, including a large and small hall, a computer suite, food technology areas, dining hall and environmental areas.  The school is also fortunate in having extensive playing fields and a well stocked library.

Admissions

The school is able to admit children up to its permitted maximum – which is set each year by the Local Education Department and the Governors. This is 90 in each year, a maximum of 30 in each class.   When this maximum is reached priority is given to children who live in the area which the school has traditionally served.  If a Year Group reaches its maximum number later, names are placed on a waiting list.

The school has seven Year groups with three classes in every Year Group.   The classes are of mixed ability but some setting does take place in the core subjects.

The Nursery has 22 children in each morning and afternoon session.

.

Aims

The aims are encapsulated in:

·         All pupils achieving the highest possible academic and social standards.

·         To provide a continuously fulfilling educational experience for each individual child who attends this school.  This will be achieved:

a)       by making the education happy and enriched.

b)       by giving the child the skills and knowledge which will enable him or her to achieve his or her full potential.

Each Pupil will follow a curriculum which:

·         Promotes equality of opportunity, and develops understanding of, and respect for, others.

·         Is broad, balanced and designed to emphasise the relevance of the knowledge, skills, creativity and understanding.

·         Satisfies the requirements of the Education Reform Act relating to the National Curriculum, ensuring that sufficient time is allowed for all aspects of this basic curriculum .

·         Provides continuity of learning experiences within, between and beyond the school years of Montem.

·         Offers challenge leading to the highest standards of personal achievement through recognition of individual needs according to aptitude and ability.

·         Develops constructive attitudes and qualities, promotes the importance of healthy living and emphasises the value of personal relationships based on mutual respect.

Attendance

Regular attendance is essential throughout a pupil’s school life if proper progress is to be made.  If a pupil does not bring a note, or if absence is occurring too frequently, we would normally contact the home for further information.  Pupils may not, in law, be kept away from school to look after sick relatives.

Pupils arriving late must report to the school office for their attendance ‘mark’.  Anyone arriving after 9.10 a.m. will be marked absent.

Pupils leaving school early must request permission to do so and report to the office so that registers may be kept accurately.

Parents must notify the school of the reason for any absence.  Failure to do so will result in your child obtaining an unauthorised absence and you may be contacted to find out why your child is not at school.  We have a web-site contact you may use.

To comply with a national requirement percentage attendance is monitored each half-term.   Should your child’s attendance drop below 95%, regardless of the reason, you will receive a letter explaining that we expect an improvement.

Over the last academic year our attendance was 92.9%, which is below the national average.  We are hoping to increase this to 97%.
