St.Peter's School

Set among fields at the edge of Old Windsor we have modern facilities and long traditions. We are a family school with high expectations in a Christian environment.

We are a Christian community based on the Church of England faith and practice. We have a tradition of welcoming and respecting children of different faiths, and world religions have a place within the curriculum.

St. Peter's has been part of the community for more than 250 years. In 1725 a bequest provided for the building of a "convenient dwelling for a master who shall teach the children" on the present site. By the 19th century it had become a Church of England "National School"; by 1974 it had developed into the present Middle School serving the 9-13 age group within the Windsor three tier system.

PROSPECTUS

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Mission

"A family school with high expectations in a Christian environment."

We are a Christian community based on the Church of England faith and practice. As a Church school we are concerned with moral and spiritual values, learn respect for each other, hold regular acts of worship and have rewarding links with the Parish Church. We also have a tradition of welcoming and respecting children of different faiths and world religions have a place within the curriculum.

INTRODUCTION to ST.PETERS

"Set among fields at the edge of Old Windsor we have modern facilities and long traditions."

We believe that St. Peter's School offers your child something special. Set among fields at the edge of Old Windsor we have modern facilities and long traditions. Small enough for every child to be known in an unthreatening environment, we are large enough to provide high quality education and competitive sport. Many of our pupils come from Old Windsor and we have close links with that community, but as part of the Windsor family of schools we also draw widely from the area and send children on to the Windsor upper schools.

CONFIDENCE IN OUR PAST

At. Through the greater part of three centuries St. Peter's has developed and grown, with the education and welfare of our children as its purpose.

CONFIDENCE IN OUR FUTURE

St. Peter's is determined to continue providing the best for present and future generations of young people. The school has a range of facilities including well equipped areas for technology, art and music, extensive playing fields, floodlit sports courts, and a new computer network.

However it is the children that are our resource and our future. Our pupils, aged 9-13, are at an important stage of academic, emotional and physical development. We have high expectations of them as individuals, actively monitor their progress, and liaise with first and upper schools to ensure challenging and appropriate development through and beyond our school. We also believe our children should develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and each other; exemplified by our system of school prefects in Year 8

PARTNERSHIP

Partnership between home and school is essential if pupils are to achieve their full potential. We aim to keep parents well informed and value parents' interest and support. The school diary provides a quick and easy way of communicating between home and school and monitoring progress. Invaluable support for the school comes from our active Parent-Teacher Association.

EDUCATION

The Curriculum

We believe that the pupils of St. Peter's need a curriculum which will enable them increasingly to take control of their own lives and learning.
Within a framework which supports equality of opportunity for all our pupils, we will provide a curriculum which will:
support Christian values and tolerance of the views of others;
promote the personal development of all to their fullest potential;
teach them how to make the best use of their time;
enable them to cope with the processes of learning;
equip them with essential transferable skills and expertise;
enlarge their imaginative understanding, capacity for enjoyment and creative powers.

All of this will be undertaken in a positive spirit within a secure yet stimulating environment. We aim not only to meet the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, but also to provide a wide variety of learning experiences.

All Years are taught:

Religious Education
English
Mathematics
Science
Technology
Information Technology
History
Geography
French
Art
Music
Physical Education
Personal, Social, Health, Education and Citizenship

Religious Education

Religious Education is based upon the Berkshire Agreed Syllabus. There is a particular emphasis upon Christianity, but also upon respect and understanding for all major world religions. Acts of worship are conducted on the basis of the doctrine and traditions of the Church of England.
Pupils attend an act of worship every day in school, and church services are arranged during term time. We hope that ALL pupils will attend, although parents have the right under the term of Section 9 of the Education Reform Act 1988 to withdraw their children from acts of worship and/or Religious Education. Parents wishing to exercise this right should discuss the matter with the Headteacher.

Sex Education

It is school policy to deliver Sex Education in the context of moral, personal religious and health education at appropriate times in each pupil's school career. Teachers aim to set the subject of sex in a framework of Christian marriage and a loving home atmosphere. The full Sex Education policy may be seen in school on request.
Parents may withdraw their children from that part of the Sex Education programme which is not part of the National Curriculum, although in most cases we would not see that as in the best interests of the children. Such requests should be made in writing to the Chairman of Governors.

Learning Support

Pupils with special educational needs are identified as quickly as possible. Individual Education Plans are drawn up and, wherever possible, extra support is provided. On occasion it may be necessary to seek specialist help outside the school. Pupils with Statements of Educational Need are provided with the level of support that is recommended in the Statement.

Homework Policy

It is school policy that pupils are set homework, typically 20 minutes a night in Year 5 rising to 1 hour 30 minutes in Year 8. This should be recorded in the school diary. Parents are asked to make sure that homework is completed and sign the diary once a week.

Teaching and Pastoral Care

We aim at an easy and secure transition from First School in Year 5. Teaching is class based in Year 5 for most subject areas, although in Technology there are smaller groups of around 20 to use the specialist facilities.

Pastoral Care is through the House structure. A House Tutor will look after a group of children drawn from Years 5, 6, 7 and 8, with older children 'buddying' the younger children in the first weeks of term by accompanying them, for example, into lunch. The tutor will meet the group daily and is responsible for guidance and welfare.

Progress in core subjects will be monitored termly.

We aim at a positive and secure environment that encourages pupils to develop a positive self-image. More details and procedures are available in our policy on 'Child Protection'.
