Here at Air Balloon Hill Junior School, our aim is to provide a first class education for every boy and girl in our care. We try to develop every pupil's talents to the full by involving them in a wide range of academic, sporting and artistic activities. Our aim is for pupils to leave us fully prepared for the next stage of their education.
Air Balloon Hill Junior School was built in 1905 to replace the old school in Crew's Hole.
Architecturally, our school is an example of the Bristol Art Nouveau style. It was designed by James Henry La Trobe (1862-1923). He also designed the cinema on Whiteladies Rd.
People always ask how our school got it's name. Well, on January 10th 1784 a Mr James Dinwiddie launched an air balloon in Bath. It flew for ten miles and was found about an hour later near where our school now is. As the first manned balloon flight had only taken place the year before in Paris, you can imagine how amazing it was to the people who saw it. The hill has been called "Air Balloon Hill" ever since.
These days there are two schools on the site:
• Air Balloon Hill Junior School (our school) • Air Balloon Hill Infants' School(our friends and neighbours)
