Message From The Head
Chew Valley School is a thriving comprehensive school serving the villages and communities of the Chew Valley – an area of outstanding natural beauty between Bristol and Bath. With 1150 pupils including 200 in the Sixth Form, the school is both a vibrant place to be and highly successful.
Young people do well at Chew Valley School. Examination results are very good (75% 5 A*-C at GCSE in 2005) and the vast majority of sixth formers go on to universities including Oxford and Cambridge. But the school is much more than an examination-factory. We aim to develop the whole person, challenging all who come to the school to achieve the very best they can in the curriculum, extra-curricular activity and personal development.
The school became a Specialist School in the Performing Arts in 2003. Since that time growing numbers of young people have been discovering the value of the arts in their lives. Productions are put on each term, there is an annual dance festival and concerts, cabarets and musical extravaganzas illuminate the school year. 250 pupils are currently registered for peripatetic music lessons in the school. We believe that the creative and performing arts make a unique contribution to the education of young people.
Sport and outdoor activities are an area of particular achievement. As well as representing the school on sports teams, our youngsters are regular squad members for Local Authority, Somerset and South West regional teams. In rugby we won the Bristol Schools’ Cup in 2005. This year, in football, we are the holders of the U18 Somerset Cup. We were also National Cheer-leading Champions last year.
Each year, more than 140 young people participate in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, undertaking expeditions at Bronze, Silver and Gold level. We also participate in the Ten Tors event, with a 35 and a 45 mile team representing Y10 and Y12 respectively. This year, the Y10s were in the first five teams home – a remarkable achievement.
Chew Valley School is one where students are treated as individuals, with particular needs and aspirations. We aim to develop positive relationships between students and staff. Rather than relying on a long list of rules, we seek to achieve an atmosphere of mutual respect where working together and consideration for others are paramount. It is this which makes Chew Valley School such a happy and successful place to be. It may also explain why Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools placed us in his list of Excellent Schools in December 2005 – one of only two comprehensive schools in the South West region to achieve this accolade.

Chew Valley School - The Setting!
The school is situated 8 miles south of Bristol between the villages of Chew Magna and Chew Stoke. It stands on a 30 acre site in open countryside overlooking the Chew Valley Lake. The school buildings are surrounded by very pleasant grounds and landscaped gardens. There are extensive playing fields and tennis courts.
The school buildings were largely completed in four stages and the school is now well equipped with specialist rooms for all subjects. ICT facilities are well developed and three new science labs are equipped with state of the art technology. Our success in achieving Arts College status has brought improvements to our facilities for drama and music.
A lottery grant has enabled us to build a new gymnasium and an all-weather pitch for school and community use. Pupils will be joining the school at a time when teaching and learning accommodation has never been better.
The School Society
The School Society is the Parent – Teachers Association of Chew Valley School and is made up of representatives from each of the villages in our area, as well as staff members.
We are committed to raising much-needed funds at a variety of events during the year. All events arranged by the School Society are for the benefit of all students at the school.
New members are always welcome, please contact us if you would like to lend a hand and make new friends at the same time. All offers of help are appreciated whether you would like to become an active member of the committee or would prefer just to help at specific events.
If parents are unable to participate in School Society events they can support the school by making donations to the School’s Charitable Trust.
Registered Charity Number 1075676.
Able, Gifted & Talented Students
The school is committed to nurturing the talents of every one of its students. We do, however, recognise that some students are especially talented in one area in particular, such as sports or music, and that other children may have outstanding academic gifts across a wide range of subjects.
To provide the appropriate challenges for these students Chew Valley School provides a stretching experience in the classroom and offers a wide range of enrichments beyond the classroom. Faculties organise special events in the Summer Term, whole year events are organised in collaboration with other secondary schools and we work with Bath and North East Somerset’s APEX Scheme to provide Saturday morning enrichments that are free of charge.
Participation in enrichment events is not restricted to students on the Gifted & Talented Register and any parent who would like to be kept informed of events is welcome to send me a contact e-mail address.
