Head Teacher’s Statement

Westbury-on-Trym Primary A very warm welcome to our school website. We hope that you enjoy finding out all about us.

At the moment there are 343 children in 12 classes. We are very much a community and all the staff work really hard to make learning fun.

We have strong links with our beautiful parish church and we are lucky to sit on top of a hill with lots of trees and wildlife around us.

If you are moving into the area and would like to visit us, please ring us to arrange a time.

Pam Derham
Head Teacher

Our School

Our school aims to provide a warm, caring and purposeful environment within which all pupils feel confident and able to work and learn independently and collaboratively.
Children should be motivated to achieve their full educational potential whilst having a sense of self-worth and social awareness. We aim to achieve this through the dedication of our staff and the school's Christian ethos. We know parents play an active part in their child's education. We value this partnership both in and out of school.
We aim to ensure that our pupils acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes which allow them to develop.

Our School Vision

Learning Together, Learning Forever

Anne Frank Memorial Plaque

In 1999 a group of Jewish musicians came to visit school and were so impressed with our pupils that they suggested we may like to be the location to place a memorial plaque to Anne Frank.
On June 12th 1999, the date when Anne would have been 70 years old if she had survived the Bergen-Belsen Concentration camp (she died in March 1945, two months before liberation), the Lord Mayor and the local Jewish community planted a horse chestnut tree in her memory. The inscribed plaque celebrates Anne’s wonderful gift of being able to write. Her diaries will be with us all now forever.
During June 2006, we had a special ceremony to link with the Refuge week held by Bristol City each year. Once again, Anne Frank’s memory taught us so much about ourselves and how we treat others with respect and care.
The picture on the right shows the tree in June 2006 with Mrs Derham and Mrs Bishop, who is our international links co-ordinator.

Pre School Activity Sessions

These activity afternoons take place during the year before starting school. They are run by volunteer Mum's and are a valuable step that have ben very successful in helping children and parents feel comfortable about starting school. The sessions are designed to stimulate young minds and whislt being fun they help to familiarise your child with the school surroundings and environment.
The meetings are a great opportunity to chat to other parents, meet Mrs Derham again, purchase uniform, meet teachers and other staff and for your little one(s) to take home crafty makes, cards, pictures and a whole lot of new experiences!
The sessions are generally heldon the first Friday of every month from 2pm to 2.45pm and for this year are as follows:
March 9th, May 11th, June 8th and July 6th ( Teddy Bear's picnic by the log trail).
We must stress that attendance at these meetings does not guarantee your child a place at Westbury-On-Trym C Of E Primary School.

School Council

Who are we?

The Schools Council is a group of 20 students (two from each class year 2 up) who discuss and deal with suggestions and situations that arise in school.

What do we do?

The Schools Council deal with all sorts of situations in school. Each class has a special folder in which they can put their suggestions that are discussed with their class, then brought to the meeting.

" We're the School Council and here's what we do
We improve our school for me and you

Breakfast club is cool

Cereal and toast for all
Chat to your friends
The fun never ends

Come cycle to school
Be safe not a fool
We've got a new shed
It's big and it's red

New benches have we
To sit under the tree
Sit and eat your lunch
Chew, chew, munch, munch

Litter pickers make our school nice and clean
The volunteers are very keen
The bins feed on wrappers and cans
We help without the use of our hands

We're the School Council and here's what we do
We've improved our school for me and you."

Zone Parliament

All our school councillors have recently attended a zone parliament day at the University Of The West Of England.

We attended workshops on environmental issues where we made and insect home that is now hanging in a tree in school. We learnt how to use paper better and will be doing a paper audit in each class. Suggestions for encouraging wildlife in our school grounds have been passed to class3/4OC as they expressed an interest in being involved in this. We brought back action plans to help improve our school.

A Report from a Pupil who attended the Parliament:

“As one of the children attending I thought the whole day was great fun. In many of the workshops we made things to take back to the school council which might then go on display. We all were able to interact with other children. Some of us were also filmed so that other council’s reps and pupils can see a video of the day.

All in all, I really liked the day and have learned a lot from it.”

    Chess Club News 2007

Chess is thriving in our school.

Once again this year, over 30 pupils aged from seven to eleven took part in the UK Chess Challenge, the world’s biggest chess competition. We expect at least five competitors from school to go forward to the area finals held in May each year.

Chess is a game for all pupils and next year we are having a real drive to attract more girls to play. At the present time, ten times more boys than girls play!

If you want to either join chess club, or enter for this years national chess tournament, please come and see Ms Derham who will explain thing to you.

Our school is a place where chess thrives!

    Westbury After School Club

    WHAT IS IT?
The club offers a range of interesting and fun activities for children after school, with the emphasis on play. These include arts, crafts, cookery, soft football, games, films and reading as well as various outings during the year to local parks and shops.

    WHO IS IT FOR?
The club offers membership mainly but not exclusively to children attending Westbury-on-Trym school. The club operates an Equal Opportunities Policy. It aims to offer multi-cultural activities seeking to promote, through play, harmony and understanding between children of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In recruiting Playworkers, applications are encouraged from all sections of the Community.

    WHEN IS IT?
The club meets each week day after school until 5:30 pm.

    WHERE IS IT?
The Club operates in the “Westbury College”, a unique and historic building owned by the National Trust in College Road, off the High Street in Westbury-on-Trym. The College offers three rooms and a small fenced garden area, allowing for both lively and quiet activities in a safe and pleasant environment. A small kitchen allows for the provision of drinks and snacks. Children attending the club are collected from the school and escorted to the College.

    WHO RUNS IT?
Responsibility for the running of the club rests with you, the parents, and is overseen by a voluntary parent committee. The day to day activities are organised by our Playworkers who offer a wide range of skills and experience in working with children. However, in the near future parents will be asked to spend at least one day working at the Club to get a feel for its running.

    HOW MUCH IS IT?
At the time of printing the fee for one child per session is just over £6, with a small reduction for more than one child from the same family. For up to date costs contact the Club Administrator.

    WHO DO I CONTACT?
Booking forms are issued by the Administrator, on a half term basis, normally at the end of the preceding half term. Parents enrolling their children are required to complete a registration form annually. If you would like any further information about the Club then please contact
