Gardening Group
The Gardening group takes place from the second half of the Spring Term until the end of the Summer Term, and is open to children in year 1 and 2.
At school we currently have two vegetables plots. Following the success of the Gardening Club last year, we are hoping to create another plot ready for next year.
Last year the Gardening Group grew:
* Potatoes
* Corn on the Cob
* Tomatoes
* Onions
* Spinach
* Leeks
* Fennel
* Squash and Pumpkins
* Courgettes
|
* Spring Onions
* Carrots
* Cabbage
* Radishes
* Lettuce
* Parsnips
* French Beans and Broad Beans
* Peas
* Strawberries
|
The Gardening Group is organised by Miss Lindop and takes place after school once a week. We were very lucky last year that Mrs Mould helped us each week which enabled more children to participate.
It is not just the children in the Gardening Group who help, at other times all children at school are given the opportunity to help look after the vegetables by watering them, weeding and picking the vegetables when ready.
What happens to the Vegetables?
Last year when the vegetables had been picked the children in the Gardening group were able to take some of them home to share with their families.
When we had a larger crop these vegetables were made available to all parents for a small donation to the Gardening Club.
When we did this in the Autumn Term we raised over £15, this was used to buy seeds for us to plant next year. In addition to those planted last year we also have miniature cauliflower, …(need to check) and a selection of herbs.
What’s happening now?
