About our school

Bodiam Manor is an unusual school, both in its history and in its ethos. Originally founded in West Sussex by the Northern family, the school moved in 1955 into a large Victorian manor house, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty managed by the National Trust and overlooking the medieval castle of Bodiam. Since then, Bodiam has grown in size and reputation, while still remaining small enough for each teacher to know and care for every child. We pride ourselves on the fact that the caring ethos we show is shown in every activity, and in every class, our children have.

The school has been a member of IAPS since 1970 and is accredited by the Independent Schools Joint Council.

REGISTRATION AND FEES

It is a very challenging time for some children if they are joining a new school or starting school for the first time. We try our hardest to make this transition as simple as possible, from tours of the school with the parents, to 'trial' days, where they spend a day with their new class (which often makes them even more keen to join us!).

If you wish to register your child for entry, a completed registration form with the deposit and registration fee should be sent to the school. Please contact the school office if you would like a registration form, or email the office.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum is a wide one, drawing on and reaching beyond the National Curriculum. Although great importance is placed on consolidating skills in the core areas of English, Modern Languages, Mathematics and Science, we believe that children should pursue excellence in all their activities - academic, creative and sporting - on the principle that whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. By the time they take their senior school entrance examinations - whether Common Entrance or Scholarship - pupils are thoroughly prepared in all the main academic subjects, as well as Information Technology, Design Technology and Latin, if a chosen option. The aim is not to shoe-horn a child into a given senior school but to equip him or her with the skills and knowledge essential for future studies and public examinations.

Specialist Teaching

Specialist teaching starts even in the Pre-Preparatory department for French, Music, Gymnastics, Dancing and Swimming. From 8 years of age the children are taught all subjects by specialist staff. This is seen as a particular strength of the school, and one that ensures a high standard of tuition in all areas of the Curriculum.

The subjects we teach include:

English
Maths
Science
Modern Languages
History
Geography
Music
Information Communication Technology
Design & Technology
Religious Education
Physical Education
Art & Design
Dance & Drama
Latin

Academic Performance

Our Children year after year enjoy a 100% success rate at Common Entrance and regularly achieve places at their first choice of senior school. We have a particularly impressive record of transfer to Cranbrook (90%). Pupils move onto a wide range of Independent Senior Schools including: Tonbridge School, Sevenoaks School, Benenden School, Kings College Canterbury, Brighton College, Eastbourne College, Sutton Valence School, Kent College Pembury, St Bede's School, Battle Abbey School, Bedgebury School, St Leonard's Mayfield, and Bethany.

In each of the past 5 years more than half our children were awarded scholarships: academic, all-rounder, sports, drama, art, choral and dance to these schools.
