st johns school

The School & College is committed to providing broad balanced, challenging,
relevant and differentiated curriculum. The curriculum is seen as a critical
element in increasing knowledge, skills and competence, creating a
climate for positive behaviour and improving self esteem. Young
people who leave St. John's will demonstrate increased personal
responsibility, social competence and intellectual curiosity.

St. Johns School is a long established charity providing care and education for a wide  range of pupils with learning difficulties in the 7 – 16 age group.

We are happy to admit pupils, boys and girls, whose learning difficulty is associated with Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD, Speech and Language problems, rare chromosomal disorders and some medical conditions.

COLLEGE

St. John’s College is a long established charity providing care and education for a wide range of pupils and students with learning difficulties in the 14 to 19 age group.

Our vision: Young people at St. John’s College will be encouraged to face new challenges. They will be supported when the going gets tough and will be proud to celebrate their achievements.

Students will normally be placed in classes and teaching groups according to their age and general level of ability. In the College the curriculum is delivered by subject specialist teachers although each student spends a significant amount of time with their year tutor. After an initial period of observation and assessment all students will benefit from an Individual Education Plan (IEP). These plans will assist the teaching staff to set challenging targets and measure progress. Each IEP will be reviewed with the young person and their parents or carers at regular intervals.

The College places great emphasis on personal, social and health education and careers education through which we seek to help young people be as fully prepared as possible to deal with the world in which they live. Throughout the college greater emphasis is placed on vocational studies and work experience and where possible students are linked to appropriate courses in mainstream colleges often with additional support from the St. John’s staff. Depending on their ability students within the College follow these nationally accredited schemes, GCSE, Entry Level, NVQ, ASDAN Youth Award, FE Award and Towards Independence.

As with education the residential provision is organised in such a way as to encourage children to move on during their time at St. John’s to increasingly challenging and independent settings. The major move comes at the age of 16 when pupils transfer from the School in Seaford to the College in Brighton.

The College has a number of residential houses providing for a range of students and placement in a house will depend on level of need and progress towards independence. All resident students will have an Individual Care Plan which assists the key worker and the care team in identifying particular areas of need and in setting targets together with the young person. These targets will plot each young person’s progress along the pathway to independence.

At present we have young people with the following learning needs.
Aperger's Syndrome; Williams Syndrome; Noonan's Syndrome; ODD: ADHD; Fragile X Syndrome; Tourettes Syndrome; Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome; Emotional Difficulties; ASD; Global Developmental Delay; Dyspraxia.

St. John's also places great emphasis on personal, social and health education through

same age as their peers in mainstream schools.
