Welcome to the Collingwood Primary School website. Using the menu wheel above or the side bar you can access information about our school: Print off or view our prospectus, see a copy of our latest newsletter, see a list of dates for your diary and of course, no school website would be complete without showing off some of our pupils' excellent work.

Thank you for visiting us. Please come back soon.

Mrs Amanda Buckland-Garnett
Head Teacher

Collingwood Primary School has Foundation Status. This means that the Governing Body is the admissions authority and the employer for all personnel. In addition the governing body owns the building and land. As with all schools, we receive a delegated budget for which governors are also responsible.

Built in 1982, the school has a semi-open plan design, which encourages a friendly atmosphere whilst still providing classes with privacy to work. The teaching spaces are set round two central spaces - a ‘small’ hall and a pottery area. Cloakrooms and toilets are situated near each class and the children enter and leave the school through these doors.

The school has two halls, which are used for assemblies, P.E., music, drama and dance. The larger of the two is equipped as a gymnasium and is also used as a dining area at lunchtimes.

A library was added in 1993 and is well stocked with reference books. In 2003 an ICT suite was a further welcome addition to the school.

The school has an excellent playing field as well as hard play areas with seating areas for quiet pursuits and spaces for more active games.

Pedestrian access is via footpaths from Ferrers Road, opposite the Asda car park, and from Inchbonnie Road.

For parents wishing to visit the visitors’ entrance is most easily reached from Collingwood road. All visitors should go first to the Reception area, situated just inside the main entrance, where the support staff will be pleased to assist you.

AIMS

We aim:

  • To provide a safe, caring and supportive environment, which will enable all children to develop their individual talents, realize their full potential and feel confident and secure.
  • To provide a structure of discipline, within which children are encouraged to adopt a caring and responsible attitude towards others in the school and the whole community.
  • To provide, within the framework of the National Curriculum, a broad and balanced education, ensuring continuity and progression through on-going assessment.
  • To encourage pupils and staff to have high expectations of achievement and responsibility and foster in children a positive attitude towards producing work of increasing quality.
  • To recognize that children learn best in different ways and to respond to their individual needs with a variety of approaches.
  • To provide equal opportunities of learning and experience for all children.
  • To develop children’s understanding of, and respect for the beliefs and customs of a multi-cultural community.
  • To foster children’s emotional development helping them to acquire a sense of wonder and the skills to express their feelings and ideas.
  • To develop confidence and a sense of achievement through as balanced programme of physical activity.
  • To foster positive communication and co-operation between parents and school on a three-way partnership of teacher, parent and child.

CURRICULUM

Our curriculum is based on activity and experience and is sufficiently flexible to allow each child to develop at a pace appropriate to their ability and needs. We believe that all children should be offered equal opportunities to participate in the full curriculum and activities of the school and we will encourage them to do so. Children participate in a variety of whole class, small group and individual activities. The Foundation Stage forms the basis of learning for reception children. The National Curriculum provides the basis for the content of the school curriculum and details of this are available at school.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

A variety of extra-curricular activities are organized at lunchtimes or after school. These vary according to the interests and expertise of the current teaching staff and have to take account of the seasonal and inter-school commitments but usually cover a wide range of sporting, artistic and musical activities. We hope these help the children to appreciate the benefits of organizing their leisure time in positive, constructive and active hobbies. Details of the current clubs may be obtained from the class teacher.

PRE-SCHOOL

The Pre-school opened in the April of 1991 and is situated in a demountable building in the grounds of Collingwood School. It is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance and is run by a management committee of parents and friends of the group. Qualified staff organise the day to day running of the pre-school and plan the curriculum in line with the Early Learning Goals.

The pre-school is accredited by the Pre-school Learning Alliance, which reflects the quality of care and education it offers to the local community.

Our aims are:

  • To enhance the development and education of children under statutory school age in a parent-involving, community-based group.
  • To provide a caring, safe, secure and stimulating environment.
  • To work within a framework which ensures equality of opportunity for all children and families.

We offer our children a carefully planned curriculum of ‘learning through play’ in a fun and friendly environment. Individual care and attention is made possible by a high ratio of adults to children (1:5) and the support of a personal key worker. Parental involvement is encouraged and welcomed and there are many opportunities for this within the pre-school.

For further information please contact the pre-school direct (tel. 07958 212577) or via the school office.
