ADMISSIONS

Every school has a size based on their "admission number". This is the agreed and planned number of pupils in the year group that can be safely and comfortably fitted into the school. All schools or local authorities that deal with their admissions (also known as "admitting authorities") have admissions criteria that they must follow.

The criteria for Redbridge schools that are their own admitting authority (Foundation and Faith schools) are on pages 16 to 25. Information about schools outside of Redbridge may be obtained by contacting the relevant authority, details at the back of this booklet.

Listed below is the order in which places will be allocated to Redbridge community comprehensive schools :

a. Children with a statement of special educational needs will be admitted to the school that is named on their statement;

b. "Looked after" children (those who are in the public care of the Local Authority);

c. Children living in a catchment area, who applied on time, based on the distance from their home to the school's main gate using the shortest reasonable walking route by public roads and footpaths, as measured by a Geographic Information System (GIS);

d. Children living in a catchment area, who applied late, that is after the deadline, based on the distance from their home to the school's main gate using the shortest reasonable walking route by public roads and footpaths, as measured by a Geographic Information System (GIS);

e. Children resident after the application deadline whose parents/carers express a preference for their "linked" catchment school;

f. Children with a sibling attending the named school, who applied on time and who is both currently on roll at the school and who will continue to attend that school in the following academic year, based on the distance from their home to the school's main gate using the shortest reasonable walking route using public roads and footpaths, as measured by a GIS;

g. Children with a sibling attending the named school, who applied late - ie, after the deadline, and who is both currently on roll at the school and who will continue to attend that school in the following academic year, based on the distance from their home to the school's main gate using the shortest reasonable walking route using public roads and footpaths, as measured by a GIS;

h. Children living outside the catchment area, who applied on time and who do not have a sibling attending, based on the distance from their home to the school's main gate using the shortest reasonable walking route using public roads and footpaths, as measured by a GIS.

i. Children living outside the catchment area, who applied late - ie, after the deadline and who do not have a sibling attending, based on the distance from their home to the school's main gate using the shortest reasonable walking route using public roads and footpaths, as measured by a GIS.

Where there are more applicants from within the common catchment area than places available, only children from within the catchment will be tested. Children from outside the catchment will only be tested if places cannot be filled from those resident within the catchment and, given the high number of applicants from within the catchment, this is highly unlikely.

SIXTH FORM

Our Sixth Form is currently in transition and we are excited about some of the changes and developments that are taking place within the Sixth Form: both curriculum and within the supporting pastoral structure.

With this in mind;

Our aim is to provide students with a broad and enriching learning experience in which students are offered an appropriate programme of study and are able to achieve their potential with in a supportive, friendly and caring environment.

We want our sixth formers to be responsible for their learning and to leave school better equipped for the workplace or suitably prepared for further learning. We are aware that whiles academic success is important, young people today need to be sound critical thinkers, socially responsible and able to interact with a range of different people. We therefore foster citizenship skills as well as encouraging academic success.

Why choose Hainault Forest Sixth Form?

Small class sizes; you will not be in a group of more than 20 students.

Good teaching. (OFSTED 2003). In some departments teaching was judged to be very good and excellent.

Caring staff: we feel that we offer a supportive and caring environment in which to learn.

A small sixth form with a friendly atmosphere.

We value the view of our students (OFSTED 2003)

Choosing courses

Students may find choosing courses in the sixth form difficult. Here are some questions to ask yourself.

Do you intend to continue studying after Sixth Form?

What do you particularly enjoy?

What GCSE grades are you likely to achieve?

What career aspirations do you have? What qualifications will you need for this?

What are your strongest subjects?

You will have the opportunity to discuss your application with a member of staff before submitting your application. You will also be interviewed, which will be a further opportunity to discuss your individual programme of study. If you need help with your application or decision making, speak to the Head or Deputy Head of Sixth Form.

For a Sixth Form application form please contact the school.
