Welcome to King Solomon High School

It has been a busy half term at King Solomon with the celebration of Chagim and various special school activities. It has been a pleasure to meet many parents at the various Year Group Parents Evening and to talk about our new School Vision for the future. I hope that parents found the meetings of benefit and that you are using the school website that is being constantly reviewed. Please check the parents section of the website where you are able to download school letters in case you missed them. We are trying to send as much communication to parents as possible via email and with that in mind please could any parents who have not been receiving emails send their email address to the school office so that we can include as many parents as possible.

It has been a busy time for the Jewish Studies Department over the past few weeks celebrating all the Chagim. During Succot we hosted the JNF informal education department who ran a fantastic session for all classes in KS3 and KS4which was very much enjoyed by all the students. The 6th form was treated to a Simchat Beit Hashoeiva Succot party at which a live band sponsored by Aish UK performed both for Year 12 and 13. All meals were of course eaten in the succah and the JS staff together with members of Ilford Chabad encouraged all the students to shake the Arba Minim.

We were also fortunate to host two Ethiopian teenagers who gave a presentation on their journey from Ethiopia to their new lives in Israel. It was an enthralling story and one of great courage and inspiration, we look forward to them returning to us to speak to more classes in the future.

I am delighted to report on a very successful Prospective Parents Evening at which we launched our new school DVD prospectus. The DVD contains vital information about the school and is aimed at all prospective new parents. Please feel free to inform any potential new parents who might have missed the parents evening that there will be a Prospective Parents Morning at 9.15AM on Thursday 8th November 2007 with further information from Ms Burgerman at the school.

Wishing everyone a good half term break.

Head Teacher

FACILITIES

Resources

The LRC, which has recently undergone extensive refurbishment, holds a large collection of text books, which includes up-to-date popular fiction books, reference books, encyclopedias and dictionaries.

We also subscribe to various periodicals which include, National Geographical, The World Today, Frontier, Horrible Histories, Horrible Science and many more.

Each student is registered via a new finger printing system called Identikit, whose details are kept on the library computer.  They can borrow up to four books and have three weeks in which to return them.  Should they fail to do this, a fine of 1p is charged for each day the book is overdue.  The fines collected go into a charity box.  Any books lost or not returned are charged for.

Computers

The main computer suite has a network of 38 computers, a printer and three scanners. All software is up-to-date and our team of computer technicians from the ICT Department is always on hand should any problems occur or if the systems need to be updated. All our computers have internet access, which is controlled, so that students can obtain all the information needed to help them with their studies and coursework. Each student is given a log-on name and password. .

Special Events

Throughout the year quizzes and competitions are held in the LRC during the lunch break. Prizes given are usually book or CD gift tokens. This is great fun and very popular with the students. Mrs. Venuto organizes Author visits for the students which has been very successful. Echo Freer has come into to visit us and there will be many more in the near future.

Reading Club

At King Solomon High School we have launched a new reading club where there are 5 Zones. Each student will have to read five books for each Zone and once they have completed them they get a prize, certificate and a letter sent home. We have great success with this new reading scheme and hope that many students will continue to participate.
