Welcome to the website of Newport Free Grammar School, a Specialist Language College for ages 11-18.

The school, after 400 years of existence, now serves a wide area of Essex and extends into parts of Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk, and welcomes boys and girls of all abilities.

Set in 34 acres of very attractive, undulating countryside, the school currently has 1000 students, including 190 in a very strong Sixth Form.

Class sizes in Years 7-11 are a maximum of 27 and in the Sixth Form the average class size is 9. Public examination results at all levels exceed national averages by some way.

Our philosophy is that we believe every boy and girl has greater resources within themselves than they imagine and therefore the staff have high expectations of all students whatever their ability. We have a highly-qualified and dedicated staff which is practised in the art of tapping those resources to the full.

Newport enjoys excellent facilities. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the school has recently benefited from a number of important building projects; a purpose-built Arts Centre, a floodlit all-weather hockey pitch, a Science and Technology Centre, a Sixth Form Centre and most recently a splendid new Sports Hall.

These fine facilities complement the curriculum we offer our students, a curriculum that is broad and balanced, and relevant for the needs of young people going into an ever-changing world.

Out-of-class activities also abound to educate young people how to use their leisure time profitably, to develop the personal qualities required for adult life, but above all to enjoy!

In short, we aim to do the following:

  • Academic achievement: to realise the full potential of every student at all levels of study through a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • Extra-curricular activities: to give individuals opportunities to develop personal qualities such as self-confidence, high self-esteem, ability to work in team situations and leadership potential. Also to make school an even more enjoyable place at which to be.
  • International Programme: to educate our students to be "world-wide model citizens" by offering opportunities to go out into the world or bring the world into school.

GENERAL AIMS

1. To enable each student to develop their full potential.
2. To provide the best possible atmosphere for learning.
3. To provide the opportunity for a range of creative experiences.
4. To invite the opportunity for each student to develop their spiritual side.
5. To enable each student to play an active and positive role in society.
6. To enable students to see personal development as something which can continue through adult life.

CURRICULUM POLICY
At Newport, every learner is entitled to a curriculum that is rich and varied, challenging and inspiring, which enables every individual to fulfil her or his potential to the highest possible standard.

We promote the view that learning should be experienced as something which is enjoyable, engaging, rewarding and confidence building.

The Education Reform Act 1988 places upon us a statutory duty to ensure that students follow the National Curriculum. We believe that each student should experience a curriculum which is characterised by breadth, balance, coherence, progression, relevance and differentiation.

ACTIVITIES

At Newport Free Grammar School we believe that the education of the whole person is very important. Our academic record is excellent but coupled with that we have an unrivalled number of extra-curricular activities that we can offer to our students. The two areas, which, by their very nature, attract most numbers of students, are music and sport. Many students are talented in both subjects and are very committed to practising each week as well as playing in teams and in musical events in the evenings and at weekends.

A long established activity is The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This attracts a certain kind of person who enjoys a challenge and team-work.

Many students are environmentally aware and join in clubs that specialise in looking after our surroundings.

There are many more activities for which you will find details on other pages. Our main aim is to help people develop into good citizens and we believe that by joining the activities we offer students gain that extra dimension to their education.

SIXTH FORM

Newport has long enjoyed a tradition of having a strong Sixth Form. Most of our Year 11 students choose to stay on into the Sixth Form where they are joined by a number of young people who come to us from local schools. Our new Sixth Form Centre was opened in September 1998, which has Sixth Form teaching rooms, a dedicated private study area and ICT facilities.

The curriculum at post 16 is characterised by choice and diversity. There is a wide range of A/S level, A2 level and VCE courses, which ensures continuity and progression as well as providing opportunities for students to take up subjects for the first time.

Academic success is obviously very important but the Sixth Form is far more than just that. We see this as a time for the whole person to develop, to extend and widen interests and an opportunity for them to put something back into the community.

A broad and varied programme of sports, music, drama and debating is available to Sixth Formers.

Our commitment to the pastoral care of young people does not end at the age of sixteen. Each student is placed in a tutor group, there is a weekly tutorial lesson and termly reviews of progress and potential are built into the tutorial programme.

The Head of Sixth Form is available at any reasonable time, by appointment, to see students and/or parents. In a relatively small Sixth Form the Head of Sixth Form knows each student personally which would not be possible in a much larger institution.

Students and parents are welcome to enquire about the Sixth Form at Newport. We offer students from other schools the opportunity to spend a day with us. Arrangements can be made by telephoning Ms Menzies, Head of Sixth Form (01799 540237).
