Welcome to the Thorpe Hall School! |
Our school aims to create a learning environment where children are happy, confident, friendly and orderly
and which enables them to reach their full potential in all forms of human development.

YEAR 7 ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS
| Pre-School Education
Thorpe Hall School is an Independent School, which offers an educational experience from the age of 2 years – 16 years inclusive.
WHAT A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY THIS PROVIDES!
The educational journey begins in the nursery and concludes either:
Ø At the end of Year 6 with transfer to one of our local senior schools
or
Ø At the end of Year 11 with transfer to a further education establishment
taking with them good academic results and a well rounded personality.
In a small caring environment we are able to nurture our children from nursery entry onwards providing a specialist teaching experience
encompassing music and drama in addition to the six areas of learning and indeed educational continuity.
We employ highly qualified staff who adopt the philosophy of:
“Every Child Matters”.
The Pre-Nursery is a small group of two year olds supervised by qualified nursery nurses. Learning is largely through play activities designed to help them gain the confidence and skills needed to integrate well with other children and adults.
They have a large, bright, well-equipped area and our aim is to make their start in education positive and enjoyable. |
Children from the age of 3 years join our Nursery where they enjoy fine purpose built facilities overlooking the school field and nature reserve. Play based activities, supplemented with small group and individual work, are planned and overseen by a teacher and fully qualified nursery nurses. The Nursery has its own outside play area including a soft surface playground. |
The Reception classes have qualified teachers who help the children to achieve the early learning goals. Activities are generally more formal in the morning and play based in the afternoon, with PE, Music and Drama adding interest to the curriculum

Teaching in the Lower School is based on the National Curriculum while providing extended opportunities in Drama, Music, French and sporting activities including swimming. Pupils are prepared for the National Key Stage Tests at 7 and 11 years and every assistance is also given to those wishing to sit the grammar school entrance tests. Overall standards of attainment are good.
The year groups generally have two classes with no more than 20 children in each, and while much of the work is the responsibility of one teacher to ensure stability and continuity, subjects such as Music, Drama, and French, are taught by specialists. For the most part class groups stay constant as they progress through the School and the transition from infant to junior and senior sections is smooth and easy.
We have excellent facilities and well qualified teachers. Our aim is to provide the children with a positive caring and safe environment. We want them to thrive and develop their academic, sporting, creative and personal skills alongside a genuine concern for the whole community.
|
The core curriculum consists of English, Mathematics, Science and French. Pupils can also study Art, Design and Technology (including Food and Textiles), Drama, Geography, History, Information and Communication Technology, Italian, Music, and PE.
A degree of choice is available for GCSE courses with pupils selecting three or four of their subjects from those already mentioned with the addition of Child Development, Media Studies, and Double Award Science.
Many students successfully sit their GCSE Mathematics in the November of Year 11 giving them the opportunity to continue with work at a higher level.

Thorpe Hall School is an Operating Authority for the D of E scheme and members are regularly involved in activities leading to the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Expeditions take place several times a year to venues that include the Brecon Beacons, Chiltern Hills and local areas of Essex.
Activity weeks are organised and run at Thorpe Hall by qualified staff and coaches during the holiday breaks. These are for children aged 5-14 years and various sports including football, tennis, golf and water sports are offered, plus badminton, cricket, hockey, drama, art and craft during the afternoons. Costs are very reasonable and for a small additional charge lunch can also be provided.
Venues for the Ski Trip have included resorts in Europe, America and Canada. Pupils from Years 6 to 11, novice to expert, have gained enjoyment and some memorable experiences such that many of them keep coming back for more. |
