Welcome to Portree Primary School

We hope you enjoy our web site and find it useful. Like everything at PPS, we are always trying to improve. So if you cannot find what you are looking for, then please do let us know - and we'll try our best to add it.

John Finlayson, Head Teacher

Our School

This is our school building from the main gate on Blaven Road. The front of the school is built on one level but as you move through the building it splits into two levels.

The school office and Head Teacher's office are the first rooms you will reach upon entering the school via the main entrance.

As you progress through the school you will come to each classroom in turn.

Our gym hall doubles as our canteen.

We are fortunate enough to have a general purpose room which we use for music and drama.  There are also 3 resource areas which classes can spill into as necessary.

Our playground is surrounded by a tall fence which not only provides safety for the children but also avoids balls escaping from the area.  At present our play area is all tarmac but we are currently developing our wildlife garden.

CURRICULUM

As stated in the school handbook, Portree Primary teaches what is called the 5-14 curriculum in line with all Scottish Primary Schools.

We aim to ensure pupils encounter a variety of learning experiences to help them to develop to the very best of their potential, both academically and socially.

Core subjects

  • Maths
  • Language
  • Environmental Studies- history, geography, health, science, technology
  • Expressive Arts - P.E., music, drama, art
  • Religious and Moral Education

Homework

As mentioned in the school handbook all pupils will receive homework and in general it will increase throughout their primary career. Infant pupils will be issued with homework packs which parents will be advised about by the class teachers.

Homework will generally consist of reading and spelling.  Individual class teachers will then set homework from any curricular area.  Homework should take no more than half an hour.  Pupils in the upper stages may be issued with all homework at the beginning of the week and be expected to timetable themselves in order to have it complete the end of the week. This is in preparation for High School aiming to make pupils more responsible.

Parents are asked to check and sign pupils homework but not to correct.  Homework is work which the pupils should be able to undertake independantly.

Find out what current projects classes are working on.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

The curriculum taught at Portree Primary School and the teaching methodologies and strategies used are continually under scrutiny. Many government and authority agencies advise and legislate about all aspects of education and offer all schools advice.

We see it as important that schools engage with the ongoing process of educational change and implement what they see fit in a personalised manner to best suit local conditions.

In this section of the web site, we aim to provide an overview of L&T at PPS, and what we think makes our approach special.

CULTURE AND SPORT

We have a responsibility to embrace and develop the unique local culture of Skye and the Highlands.
Pupils in all classes are expected to be involved in a wide range of broad and balanced learning experiences.
We aim to embrace all aspects of the school curriculum in an interactive and enthusiastic manner.
